Hey guys, i read in an article recently that before the 19tho r 18th century(cant remember which... couldn't find the article, was in newspaper or something), the large majority of people, even the Church, considered the Bible's stories as not being literal at all and just being a way to describe morals and events for human understanding. Of course this isn't all the writings of the Bible but most of the parables and stories involving Biblical characters . Apparently more modern Christianity suddenly changed this view and so now a much larger number of people do believe large sections of the Bible literally occurred/are meant and are not just parables. |

Is that true? If so, that's genuinely interesting. I would thoroughly agree that Biblical stories are more moral tales (though I'm sure that many did happen to varying degrees of accuracy). |
|
Was there a particular reason cited as to why they were not taken literally? |

Are you dreaming?
And what about their parents' parents? |

Exactly. I worded it that way to make it a sort of recursive affair - very few fundamentalist Christians (or staunch believers in any religion, really) made a conscious decision to take up their beliefs. Their beliefs were simply pounded into them from birth by their parents, and likewise for their parents and the parents before them. Once the indoctrination takes root, it is passed on like a virus - it's a 'meme', as Dawkins would put it. |

Well basically the Church preachers and most others believed as it was the book of God. It was facts and ways to life dumbed down to human understanding through various parables that related tot hem or that they could understand fully. David and Goliath, Joana(sp?) and the Whale, etc. They didn't happen but they described things such as keeping faith, being strong, etc. IN ways we could semi relate to. |

I don't even want to imagine a porn flick like Jonah and the Whale. |

If it is meant to be literal, it is just one more addition to the "game." |

The New Testament is pretty much just Old Testament FanFic anyways. |
