I read a chapter of a book called "The Secret Teachings of All Ages" written in the 20s by a well known symbologist. There is a chapter entitled, "The Sun: A Universal Deity" which discusses how symbols are actually very accurate.
There are differences, for instance Christ' life as portrayed by Gnostic texts and the book of John the Baptist is nothing like common sun mythology. The book of Matthew and some others, however, contain what I can only describe as symbolical myths adapted to Jesus' life so that the Roman's did not have the change their Holidays. This includes the nativity scene and certain details about the ressurection. Much of this was reiterated in Zeitgeist but the understanding is mostly Infantile. If you'd like, I could summerize this chapter for you. It would take a little while though as it's hard to summarize this writer since every word he writes seems so necessary to the point he is making.
