I'd gladly help out if I didn't feel that compiling anything like this is nearly impossible.

I think each individual must interpret their own dream sign. a predominant dream sign. It is almost impossible for a universal one, IMO.

Rationally, I am of the same opinion as both Howetzer and Bird, but my heart wants to believe there are certain constants to all dreams.

I mean if there is anything to Jungian theories (I'm not a big Jung follower I'm just saying) of a universal unconscious then maybe there are a few universal symbols.

I have a list of recurring symbols that I posted in the general dream discussion forum but I still haven't got any posts in response so I do have the feeling that it might be a bit of a dead-end.

How and ever I don't think that means that the idea should be abandoned completely so I'm going to contribute a list based on my recurring dreams (ie. more than five times per symbol), for what it's worth:

Water (in all its forms and in virtually every dream)

Vast, complex buildings

Libraries

Flying machines

Roads

Empty old-world cities

Hope it helps in some small way and all the best

I find that working in your emotions when you're trying to interpret dreams can be the best way to figure out what your brain is trying to tell you.

For example, if you're feeling worried about something throughout your dream, then most likely in waking life your worried about some upcomming event. Then say if a car came up repeatedly in your dream, incorporate that into your emotions and you could end up with: worried about learning to drive, being in a car accident, not being able to afford car insurance, and so on.

And try Googling "Dream dictionaries" and you'll come up with a bunch of sites that have all the standard dream signs.

Once again, I agree. I think the feelings the symbol arouses in you are more important than the physical characteristics of the symbol itself.

But it's for that very reason that I believe there must be a few universal elements.
There are a few things in human experience that arouse pretty much the same feelings in everyone, its only the way people react to them that differs.

Fine by me, that's what they're there for.
I'm desperate for some input as to what my dreams might mean so I'm right behind anybody prepared to try and do something like this.

water: emotions, moods and flow of fellinh energy
buildings/libarys: i think buildings and libarys are conected, buldings, such as youre home, represent safty & personal felings the rooms in the bulidings represent something to. libarys represent your experences in life and youre skils as well as knolig.
fiying mishins: fiying in genarel reprsents the ganing of indipendence & expresses potential flying mishens mean you wont yo gane indipendence but something is holding you back. it depends if you are flying at all.
roads: depends on how meny roads thear are, if many it might mean you are having truble diciding witch path to take in life.
old citys: depreshion or lonley ness.

I agree for the most part with all those interpretations, and I have to say that I've been researching and it seems that I'm not the only one with these particular recurring symbols.

I have also seen water interpreted as spirituality and, in some circles, sexuality.
Might sound weird but I have this intuituve feeling that on some levels spirituality, emotions and sexuality are connected. (I'm presently trying very hard to find answers in that direction.)

I also have the feeling that particularly large, complex buildings might relate to the mind somehow.
In my dreams libraries always seem to be particularly sacred and special areas of these places.

Flying machines in my dreams are usually huge and powerful and are very often machines of war, sometimes killing people.
I think, if they do represent independence and confidence, I'm afraid that mine will be destructive to others somehow if I allow it to take flight.

I'm not sure about the old cities, though. In my dreams they usually are incorporated with a very strong feeling of having a mission I must fulfill, or a special task I need to accomplish.
Will need to research this one for myself further.

If any more start appearing on a regular basis I'll post them.

What about living in a strange house or apartment? I dream about that constantly. In fact if I am dreaming about living someplace, it is almost always a strange place, and even if it is my house, things are different.

P.S. I guess you meant symbols and interpretation rather than signs. I think dreaming of a house means what you are feeling about your own body, and the attic means the mind, etc.

Well...I don't really feel unsafe, except for the amount of cat hair; I guess I might unconsciously not trust myself, but how would I know?

Thanks tho.

I always have the setting of my dreams around school or church. ALWAYS.
And if it's neither they're hinted at, like a church desk at the RAM or a classroom in a tree.

I think those two are very common...

I've heard of Places of Safety, Home, Offices, Schools pretty often but I've never heard of a recurring Church theme.

Wonder what that means...

it depends, are you religios? if not this is what i can say, you probibly have a strong urge to exist, you may wont, or have a sense of interdependence. the physical structre of the chirch represents inbult qualites.
hope this helps.

Well, if it can help, my most commons dream symbols are:
- ghosts/living dead (always very friendly). There is no "normal" death, death is always associated with ghosts.
- churches/abbeys... an omnipresent symbol during my teenage. I am atheist although I think I'm spiritual
- the seaside
- railways (me walking along the railway, trains are rare)
- moving. 95% of my dreams imply moving from one place to another. Most of the time it is the only action. Sometimes I move because I'm looking for something/someone.

seaside: The state of mind to intuitions and emotions it is also open to pre-or non verbal experences.
frendly dead: memories, feelings that hunt us; the friendly part sugests that you dont fear death? Might meen or represent fantasies hopes or past dreams.
abbeys: This represents a powerfull regnerative side of your innerlife or feelings, if you dont enter or come into contact, it means you might have anger towared dogma
moving: Something big in your life or reaching a wider awarenes of youre life or situation; to be beyond the fears and anxieties of everyday life. The part about lookeng for someone or thing sujests that you are lonley or that you are in need of help or that you are restless and/or tens.
railways: This is all i could get on walking on the railway with no or little trains. you are bound on an uncouncios jurny that you must complete on youre own without any shortcuts and without skiping steps. riding the train would deny you the experence and the no-how to compleat youre jurny.

Not read through the whole topic but these are a couple of mine:

Teeth falling out: This is a common one for me, have a lot of dreams about my teeth falling out and know this is a dream sign of mine, one of the more common ones.

Faulty electrical equipment: Typically for me this is normally a camera, since I am into my photography. Normally it's faulty in a way that it would not normally break down i.e the lens is more like a periscope and cant see through it or something like that.

Women: Yes, you read it right. I have found myself, when ever I meet a girl in my dreams, question if this is a dream or not. As I seem to have women in my dreams all the time I have found it very easy to become lucid everytime I see a girl in my dreams! The hard part though is not doing the obvious, and exploring the lucid lol.

Hope this helps!
