A type la supernova that transpired 21 million years ago in the Pinwheel Galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major (Big Dipper) was discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory Survey on August 24th 2011, which was created for the sole purpose of detecting astronomical events as they unfold or "has unfolded". This supernova dubbed as SN 2011fe is the youngest type la ever discovered. It is nearing it's 10th magnitude brightness within the next few days so if any of you guys have a nice telescope or even a decent pair of binoculars you may be able to capture the event yourself. It will appear, blueish-white, just above and to the left of the last two stars in the Big Dipper handle.
Here's a reference for you.

EDIT -- Sorry wrong sub-forum can someone please move this over to Science & Mathematics, thanks.
