If every action has an equal and opposite reaction, where is this opposite reaction for the expansion of the universe?

Maybe the effect of gravity on matter is increasing as space expands? Perhaps the change is insignificant compared to the length of time humans have been measuring the gravitational constant.

I'm an analytical chemist, so my two cents don't matter here, but I felt like putting them in.

How nice - there's still life left in here - might come along with some more!

Unfortunately - I do not know overly much about physics - what I understood is, that dark energy is prime suspect for causing the accelerated expansion of our universe - while dark matter explains why galaxies and clusters hold together, even if the inherent gravitational forces of the visible matter wouldn't suffice for that.
