I have to agree here. A DM is key and those rules are just a guideline. I've always been annoyed by rules lawyers (D&D term: People who go strictly by the book, word for word). What a pain! It's a game, hence it's supposed to be fun, not stressful and strict. *
I've played D&D since my dad introduced me to Tunnels & Trolls (anyone remember that?) and AD&D when I was about thirteen. I worked in a comic/gaming shop for about three years and gamed with my coworkers (D&D3e) for almost as long. I used to know my stuff but there have been a couple of new editions since then and I'm not sure what changes were made. *
Ah. D&D. It puts me in mind of a bunch of friendly geeks in the livingroom with lots of pizza and snacks and great imaginations. I really, really miss my old group and our silly, on-the-fly DM. He NEVER had a linear adventure and every now. Ultimately, the party had a task but he didn't keep us on railroad tracks, so to speak. He pretty much let us do what we wanted and he would go with it. We constantly challenged each other's minds, and It was wonderful. We always had so much fun. That, to me, is what makes a really good DM. * *
Nostalgia...
Ah...Man, that's so much fun. I still have my group together. Right now, we just got done with a campaign (I was DMing; I LOVE DMing...Plus, they won't let me not DM, hahah), and my friend and I are doing something new. We've rewritten some of the rules of D&D, and placed it in the future. I know, there's a book that expands on the future, but to be honest...It kind of sucks. So, it's a new D20 system RPG set in the future. Him and I are going to co-DM, so that it's easier because we can run two parts of the campaign together and we can split up and stuff. It's going to be great. We ran a "beta test" tonight, actually.
God, I love D&D so much.
The last campaign that I ran was AMAZING. It was based on Norse mythology and Loki and such. We had the most fun arrangement of characters, and EVERYONE roleplayed. It was like a DM's dream. Even the usually-annoying Hound Archon Fighter roleplayed to the bone. It was great. DMing is really, really fun for me. I kind of like it more than adventuring, actually. I love it when the players challenge their surroundings too. Oddly, I just love it when the players catch me off guard and do something utterly insane that I was never expecting, and then I have to go and rewrite the storyline later (in secret). With the last bunch, I had to do that after every session.
