      Stupid science fair project...

We are doing this science fair project for school and my last desicision was to do the topic, "Does eating different foods affect how "weird" your dreams become." I wouldn't be suprised if she said, "but the problem is, what if you don't have dreams that night??" or something like that... haha...

I'm going to make up the dreams beforehand anyways so I know how it's going to turn out... it's going to be something like this.

Eating chocolate ice cream made my dreams very very weird.
Eating a banana didn't do anything.
Eating grapes made my dreams more realistic.

      Yeah...

your teacher will want you to define weird. weird is a relative term and not easily defined. good luck with your BSing however.

yeah, I also thought about that too. That will most likely be the hardest part.

Yes, she's the type of teacher that thinks she is scientific. She will say that I can't really define it. The "definition" will be something like this...

      Weird -
      - A character says or does something that isn't usually said or done in society.
      - One might have paranormal abilities.
      - Creatures or characters aren't in normal form or transformed. Such as a giant spider, animated characters/scenes, possibly no legs/arms/head (or more than usual of those...).

Can someone please give me some more listings for weird that are like that? That would help in my BS.

how about you record your dreams prior to the experiment and see if there are any changes in dreams after you eat certain foods. -- that will be hard too but a little more substantial.

I still remember my middle school science fair topic... Heh heh.

"What does the existance of star trails validate about the rotation of the Earth?"

It wasn't a hard topic but it drew a lot of attention cause of the time-lapse photos I took.

I was thinking about your idea this morning on my drive to work.
I think I will get my son to do it next year. It's a great idea, and would probably win local and possibly regional and state.

But.....to do it, you will need about 6 months worth of data. Could set it up something like this:

Problem: Does what I eat affect the contents of my dreams

Hypothesis: I think that eating foods with a lot of sugar before bed will cause me to have more dreams containing adventure.

      Experiment:

      Pick out different food types:
      Salty, Sugary, Spicy, bland, no-snack

Eat one food for an entire week and classify your dreams for that week into the following categories:
Adventure, scary, peaceful, strange, lucid dream, no dream

Switch foods each week until you have gone through all of them.
After this, for a control. Switch foods every night for a week and classify your dreams.

Repeat all of the above for 6 months. You can include your dream journal in your research material. Judges love lots of data.

At the end of that time, you will have a very nice set of data that you can put into bar charts. Something like

      Spicy:
      Adventure - 4
      scary - 10
      peaceful - 5
      strange - 3

      Salty:
      Adventure - 9
      scary - 2
      peaceful - 5
      strange - 4

      and so on.

You can then use your data to say if your hypothesis was correct.

Man, this is a really cool experiment.
you must be the change you wish to see in the world...

Thanks seeker, but I don't have that much time hehe. What my plan is just eating foods... such as peanut butter tonight, drugs such as melatonin, tylonal, and maybe tums, lots of milk/dairy.

I'm going to list how weird my dreams are... can someone help me with my current list on how to judge "Weirdness"?

i would leave drugs out of it. seriously. stick with foods because drugs add another complex level to it.

well, there is another problem... it will be hard to get dream that will be okay to use at school... for example... last night I had a *really* nice dream hehe. My plan is since I already have a lot of dreams a night that I remeber, I will get 2 or so that are the most "okay" to use at school and edit them to be a little okayer...

Also, I really hope I have a lucid dream because then I can control the weirdness.

Adidas: It gives me the excuse to use melatonin.

if you want to have "selective" research, it seems like a waste of time.

the whole project will be a waste if you're not going to pay attention to the more "controversial" dreams.
