There are 4. Breads and other milled grains, fruits/veggies (plants other than milled grains), meat, and dairy. Candy isn't considered a "food group" because it is not reccomended. In order to have a balanced diet, which is far healthier than going on any fad diet, all 4 major groups need to be included in every meal. I've been eating 3 balanced meals a day along with cardio and weight training and have lost 75 pounds, all without fad diets, or cutting out carbs. My 5th food group would be alcohol.

The "Four Food Groups" were invented by cattle ranchers. I haven't eaten dead flesh or animal squeezins in a couple of years, and I'm in the best shape of my life.
