      Attempting polyphasic

Is there any real benefits to attempting polyphasic sleep? I was thinking of giving it a go but I have kind of a busy schedule this year and don't want to feel drowsy 24/7 which can be the case even with a few hours of lack of sleep I've noticed or slight deviation from my sleep cycle. Taking those short naps just doesn't seem like it would work in the long run but I haven't attempted it myself so I'm not sure the case.

but you'd only feel drowsy during the adaptation period which is maybe about two weeks. From there on things would only get better. And from what I have read, people actually feel a lot more refreshed and alert when on a polyphasic sleep schedule.

And the naps... well they do work because after fully adapting, you fall asleep in a matter of minutes and quickly enter a rem sleep that makes you feel all refreshed.

I'm going to give it an attempt in a bit (within the next week maybe) I just don't know if I'm the right person for it. I'm having trouble getting readjusted to morning as it is :S. Especially since I do WBTB all the time.

That groggy feeling is hard to get over. Is there anyway anyone knows to avoid that? Even slight deviation from sleep cycle can cause that I noticed... Like some days I barely get any sleep and I don't have that feeling. Other days I get alot of sleep or more than enough sleep yet it still doesn't happen...

I know it has to do with the part of the sleep cycle I've been waking up in at times but what if I wake up in that "state"? Can I just take another short nap to readjust? (doublepost)

I would read this artical before you made a decision, just so you know exactly what the opposers to polyphasic sleep think and why. http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic.htm

The supermemo article has been heavily critised in the past for not having a legitimate source. It is not a good example of criticisms of polyphasic schedules. Although, I can give you a few:
      • Any type of non-monophasic schedule is fighting the biological make up of sleep times. That is, humans have slept for a single block during the night for thousands of years, and it is therefore less restorative for the body to sleep at alternative hours.
      • The transition period is particularly dangerous because it is self-inflicted sleep deprivation. This opens the door for all types of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, bipolar and some circadian rhythym sleep disorders.
      • The patterns can be unsocial or inconvenient for others.
      • Depending on your sleep schedule, it might be difficult to go out for more than a few hours.
      • Most people hate you for it.

Uhh, those were all things that are in the article... So? Besides, no offense, but I believe the article is more trustworthy than an uncited statement.

You would be in a state of WBTB like all the time, so you could have more lucids!

Ya, I think I might hold off till I have a break of some sort cause it'll probably really mess up my university schedule .

I think that the fact that attempting polyphasic sleep would leave me extremely tired is why I avoided doing something like that, since it defeats the purpose of sleep. Also, I can't exactly cite anything, but I've been told by a psychiatrist friend that the later hours of a block of sleep are when more of the "restoration" and healing occur ... I don't know for sure, so look it up.

If polyphasic sleep is healthy, then the obvious benefit is having more hours in the day to do stuff while awake, which I'd love. But I don't think it's possible for me, which is why I'm working on lucid dreaming.

And I tend to lucid dream mainly when I am well rested, because stress and sleep deprivation ruins my concentration.

If you do try it then let us know how it is!
