Edit: Interesting article, but, one problem exists and its the fact that you can still remember memories from ages ago and I mean ages, so, if the neural connections are being severed when you sleep, you shouldn't be able to remember them. Also, this was done on flies, so, there might be some other problems with the way our brain works in comparison to theirs

However, memories do fade in clarity, you forget details in the memories, and you lose the connections between things that remind you of the memory.

Maybe neaural connections for the unimportant pieces of information, such as useless details, are destroyed? Just a thought (which will probably be destroyed when I sleep tonight ;]).

Well, I think it depends on how strong the memory is and your mindset. Maybe connections for unimportant pieces, but, you still definitely remember memories even if they fade in clarity as time passes. My point is that if the connections were severed, you wouldn't remember those memories
