Easy to fall asleep, but the quality is awful.

First of all - hello everyone! I'm new here. I vivid dreams every night (seemingly all night), and I have seemingly 100% recall the next morning. Also, after so many nights/weeks/months/years with all these dreaming, I have had several lucid or quasi-lucid moments, which I will post about in the other topic areas. One reason I'm interested in developing lucid dreaming is because of the problems I have with nightmares. Here is my sleep health question for all of you:

I started getting migraines and suffering from extreme daytime exhaustion a few years back. I feel like I dream all night, and every morning I wake up tired. The dreams are extremely vivid and unfortunately are often nightmares. I fall asleep quickly and get the average amount of sleep. I went to a neurologist and got a sleep test; it turns out that I don't get any "good sleep." I alternate really quickly between light sleep and REM, something like 40 times a night. The doc prescribed topamax, and essentially, it was a miracle drug. No dreaming, no headaches, woke up energized, etc. But then, months into it I got granuloma annulare. That is a separate long story. Feel free to look it up. Long story short, I had to stop taking the topamax. Everything is back to the way it was before the topamax. I am a ghost of myself. I don't have the money to go back to the doctor right now. All the over-the-counter sleep aids seem to be for insomnia, which is not my problem. I fall asleep very quickly once I'm in bed. Anyone have this problem and find a solution? Any advice? Thanks in advance. PS - my sleep study ruled out apnea, restless leg, and narcolepsy.

Note: My long term goal is to use lucid dreaming to turn my nightmares into something more positive, but I have to admit that sometimes I'd rather just not dream at all. My question here is - do you have any suggestions for healthier sleep for someone who has my problem?

Also, I know how it is with a big forum like this. If there is a relevant thread that this should be moved to, by all means, let me know. Thanks!

Ok well i'm not a doc. but a lot of people here may be able to help. I could try:

What are some of your nightmares?
You would actually be surprised of what you can turn your nightmares into. Like I had one that some guy kidnapped my gf and I went to go confront him in anger. I turned scared but I realized I could just make friends with him. So I said, "hey hows it going" in a friendly way.

Suddenly, the whole idea of my gf being kidnapped was gone, this bad guy was now like my best friend. it's so got freaking nuts you know?

As for your actualy physical sleep problem, you don't have to answer on the forum but you can ask your self if your diet might have anything to do with it. Something giving you too much energy causing you to lightly wake up 40x a night? You could also try exercising if you haven't tried that yet or if your not already doing it.

      I hope this helps.

My nightmares are very, um, feasible is the word, I guess. They aren't fantastical. They are very much things that could happen in real life, which creates a lot of confusion for me during my waking life, I'm sure you could imagine!

I know the source of my nightmares for sure... the reason I sought out the lucid dreaming forum today was because last night I had an extended moment in which I was able to turn my nightmare into something. I'm going to post about it this afternoon when I get a chance.

I think that the exercise is a good idea - I don't work out enough for sure. My problem is this really intense exaustion during my waking hours. It's so hard to work out when you're fall-on-your-face tired all day!

But the question is when to work out?

Also, has anyone had any experience with any particular teas or herbal remedies that induce a more pleasant night of sleep?

It seems that your whole wake vs sleep life has a complete flip-flop. your suppose to be tired when sleeping and awake in waking life lol.

maybe you should exercise at the end of the day so your more relaxed at night.

But also since you have this whole flip-flop issue, have you considered pulling an "all-nighter"? I know a doc. or anyone else here probably wouldnt recommend it but atleast by the time you go back to bed for the night, after being awake for so long, you might have a better chance staying asleep. It probably won't help your nightmare situation though.

If these nightmares resemble scenarios from waking life, you should probably start doing reality checks if your not already doing it and remember to do one maybe when you feel some kind strong emotion. So then when you later on have a nightmare, which are usually stressful, you may be able to recognize it and solve it.

Just how to solve it? Have you thought about spinning a new dream scene? I never really rely on spinning but you could also trying walking through a "door to another dream". You have to be lucid ofcourse to try it.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! I can tell I'm going to love this forum. I'm a little embarrassed to talk about these things to the people in my daily life - I don't think they get how my dream world has such a profound effect on my waking life.

      Welcome to our world

Some of us don't like to tell people in real life.

I might be mistaken but I have an idea that you can try some LD inhibitors. Have look on the forum - they are some threads about what is BAD for LD. For instance 5-HTP (works till 1,5h after intake) or alcohol. Some of them may reduce REM cycles in your sleep

Cannabis promotes deep sleep and suppresses REM.

I have definitely noticed that drinking alcohol (like, 3 stiff drinks) before bed allows me to sleep deeply and without nightmares, but the problem is that I don't really like drinking. I have not found that cannabis helps much with deep sleep, but it could be an issue with quantity or the type...

I forgot to mention - I started drinking this tea before bed called Nighty Night Organic Tea: https://www.maxvite.com/62/2115/Trad..._/product.html. I was skeptical that tea could help me, but actually I've been thrilled with the results. My sleep has been more restful. I suspect that I'm still having some bad dreams, but I'm somehow less aware as I'm having them. Also, my dream recall has been practically zero, and really, it was the recall of my dreams that was causing me the most problems.

Good to hear that you are better now.
For many folks here (including me) your problem would rise their eyebrows as this is what they are looking for: loads of REM cycles = almost instant WILD + excelent dream recall. Life is funny ...
