      Staying up late often?

OK so for me I would usually go to bed between 10pm or 11pm. On odd nights would go to bed at 11:30pm. This year I've been going to bed around 12am - 1am. I've been doing it about 2 months now, and I think I'm getting used to it. I don't know why but normally I would feel like dying each morning, but it's not too bad anymore.

At first I was so exhausted that I wouldn't remember any dreams in the morning, but now that I am getting used to it, and I am remembering dreams like before.

first of all, does the body get used to getting less hours of sleep and adjust accordingly, and if so, how?

Also has this ever happened to you?

Debatable... Every person needs a certain amount of sleep to function properly. Some more, some less.

Whether or not you can change how much you need is unsure. But for the most part, people (who aren't college students) get more sleep than they really need.

Over all, I would think this is just you waking up at a different stage of sleep. The deeper the sleep you are in when you wake up, the groggier you are. Wake up later if you are going to bed later. (or earlier...depending on sleep cycles.)
