Red face

Hello members.

T Joe did an awesome job designing my website for my small business.
Adelphia offers a free 10mb web space but only for personal use.

It is static? just an information site. It should be inexpensive but I am not sure to use a web host through one of my email accounts or what??

Get a Domain name. etc.

I need this up kinda fast. The site is done. I just need to get my shit together so Joe can upload the site.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks a ton Joe!!! beers on me next 100 times we go out!

If you want free, go ifastnet.com. No ads, unless the person gets a 404. Then they have one ad. Thats it. A good deal, considering that it's free.

I have a bad experience with free hosts. Being free, lots of people tend to use them. They also tend to be really shitty.

But if you're so inclined to have a free host, go for one. I'd still go for a paid host. There are some very cheap but well done paid webhosts out there. As has been said before, site5.com. I'd refrain from 1&1 (1and1), it's supposedly very shitty.

Also try to refrain from offers such as "500 GB space and 500 TB bandwith" or other ridiculously high bandwith/space offers for hardly no money. The thing is, these hosts are usually unreliable and because they provide so many space they will be used for warez and stuff, or other hueg files. Your site will become slooow.

Try to go for the space you think you need + 100-200. Also take a look at the amount of views you think you'll get. If you think this is a lot, go for at least 5-10 Gigs of bandwith, 1Gig may sound like a lot but it isn't.

Of course, paid is also way more reliable, usually has superb support (especially in comparison with free hosts), and isn't as "worn down".

Also if you have a company (or the website is for a company, whatever) then you should definately get a domain name. If your clients have to go to http://package15.server2.freehost.com/~yourname/ then they'll be more likely to just.. not go. Get a short, catchy TLD (Top-level domain), so be sure the domain is com, org, info, net, etc. Don't go for crazy/free local country domains, they usually suck bad, and it looks way more professional if you have a com/org/info/net. This might be convincing - Take a look at the most popular domain names. Notice anything? Exactly.

But I'm probably taking this way too far.

S'all about the contention ratio....
how many other people (just like you) are using the same service at the same time

ratios are
1:xx
Ie. under full load, every server in the cluster will be serving xx people simultaniously

"normal" isp's will offer webspace, incoming & outgoing mail servers with a contention ratio of about 1:50

Corporate packages are typically 1:20

Others include
1:10
1:5
1:1 (basically you're the only one using the box)

so,
lower contention ratio's
particuarlly for good performance at peak US usage times

Howitzer - it is just a static site? You already have your domain registered?

PM me if you haven't chosen anything yet. I have a few spare IPs... but not a lot of horsepower for high traffic or dynamic sites. No FTP - SSH access only for security reasons.

If you haven't registered your domain yet, I recommend GoDaddy - and you might even want to use their hosting. I've been dealing with them for years now, and they just keep getting better.

Hey , thanks guys.

Yes pj. It is a static site. Thanks for your offer.
I was having bad experiences with the free hosts too.
I chose MYsite. It gave me a domain name and several options to choose from.
It is very comprehensible and a user friendly set up. It is less than $10.00 per year.

Once I chose this one I got more finished one day than the previous week.

What do you think. <FEEDBACK>

It is beautiful in every regard OTHER THAN the wunderground dominating the top of the page. Your business's name should be the first and last thing visitors see.

It is nice to see a pretty layout, fast load and not a lot of crap to wade through to get to the important stuff - what you do... how you do it... what separates you from the rest. Nicely done.

If I were in your area and looking for a landscaper, the one additional thing I might like to see are some references or endorsements.

Anyway - there's my opinion. Lose the weather. That's not why I'm there.

Thanks.
You are right. You should not have to scroll down to see your main purpose of the site. As we are all under the weather, so to speak I thought that the weather ticker would be a good attribute.
If I do keep it it will end up at the bottom.

Things I want to add.
One thing you said, "References or endorsements."

That would be cool - would keep people coming back.

If you really want to attract attention, consider maybe doing a weekly column and syndicate it via RSS which would link back to your site. There are probably a lot of sites out there that would welcome something like that.

Even better, if you could get a local paper to pick up on the idea. Then you could maybe start a weekend radio show, syndicate that, sell it across the country and retire in staggering wealth in two years.

pj is very right to suggest RSS. RSS is the future. My opinion is not at all biased (I want RSS' babies).
