I just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.04 and I have a few questions.

How do I stop Beryl from loading on login? The only reason I had it was to have the cube desktop, but the new Ubuntu has that natively and I want to delete it. I can remove it from the Add/Remove apps program, but I'm sure if I do that without removing the reference in the auto execute file it will cause problems.

There are tons of music players to choose from. Which one acts the most like iTunes, both in functionality and interface. iTunes is what I'm familiar with, but I can learn a new GUI, I mainly want a program that will play ANYTHING. Wav, Mp3, AAC...

What is the best movie player? Which one has codecs for almost everything. Media seems to be lacking in Linux. I heard that there is a player that will automatically download the correct codec if it doesn't have it, which one is that?

Amarok is by far the best music player for Linux. As for movie players, I used Xine as it had some very helpful keyboard shortcuts, but for emergency viewing (where no codecs can be found or something), VLC should work (not very good but it gets you there)

As for removing an application on startup, /etc/init.d/ contains files which contain start-at-boot application paths, try looking in there.

I decided to give ubuntu another try, on a completely different computer so hopefully I wouldn't have many of the problems I had the first time I tried it over a year ago.

It took six tries before I finally gave up. I got a range of very queer errors, my favorite being this one, which is clearly (or not-so-clearly) a list of files and their respective md5 hashes along with a pretty purple banner and a windows 9x type dialog:



I'm guessing it was just a shitty disc, in which case I'll probably just burn a new one or order a free disc in the mail. Sometimes I think I have too much patience with computers.

EDIT: Delivery apparently takes 6-10 weeks, fuck that!

Well they are free disks

I ordered my 7.04 as soon as it was released.. it should come soon.

6-10 weeks? I got my 10 CDs in not even 2. But yeah, unless you want fancy CD covers and stuff, you can just download it.

Why not just download an ISO and burn it? Or download the minimal ISO and network boot.

Yeah, just download it, it takes about an hour.

Oh, right you use Windows and don't have ISO writing capabilities :p Try MagicISO.

Thanks Tweak, I looked in it and it looks like the Program remover cleaned everything up. I was just worried that it would pull a Windows and leave pieces of it behind.
