DVDDecrypter is pretty good for ripping them, to your hard drive and it's free. You might also want to consider buying a package like Ulead Video Studio, I've been using it for about 5 years now and it's only $99.

Handbrake is the standard. Just google it, it's free. It's been on the Mac for some time and I use it exclusively for DVD ripping, but they recently released a port to the PC. It features multiple formats (including H.264,) you can limit it by size, bitrate, and a few others. It has presets for Apple TV, iPod, and iPhone, plus you can make your own. Creates chapter markers, and allows for two pass encoding.

Sorry guys its not working for me. Decrypter is no more, I got something similar but it just copies the dvd data onto your harddrive plus its only in french, I flunked that class. And they're still .vob files, no good there and then I tried hand brake and it converts them to mp4 but nothing in my computer handles that, avi files looked good but wouldn't even play anywhere not even on a divX player. and I dont know what that other one is.

I think I'm just going to wait until I buy some software, this free stuff isn't working. Until then I'm giving up on it. Thanks for all the help!

I forget how to do it in Windows, but this is what I remember.

Right click on the MP4, then Open With...
Choice Quicktime (or iTunes) and then make sure the box labeled "Always use this application" is checked.

Now it should work, H.264 is by far the best codec out there and that's the one that you want to use and are the standard formats for anything that Apple makes (including your iPod.) If for some reaosn you don't have iTunes or Quicktime you can get them from the Apple website.

DVD Shrink is pretty good - thats what I use.

DVD Decrypter, just rip the vob-files. Then use DGIndex to demux the audio and create an index file (D2V). Now create a simple AVISynth-script that loads the video and dubs the audio, load this in nandub (or megui) and encode to whatever MPEG4-format you prefer.
