If it worked once then it's probably not the drivers. Open your computer and make sure that your graphics card isn't loose. Do any of your other DirectX 9 programs work?

If none of them at all run now then it's your card. Here is very technical: jiggle the card

Also try reinstalling DirectX. I believe that they are up to DirectX 10 now, your drivers should update themselves and it's possible that the newest driver works best with the newest DirectX.

Installing drivers isn't something that the companies leave to the users, it messes with the BIOS and it's better that they do it for you.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but if the card is not working then shouldn't DirectX do software rendering?

      Duhhhh uhhhh duhhhh....

Only in case that it's a motherboard update.

Normal drivers like for sound etc. dont mess around with the bios, they only register specific -call functions in the systems dynamic libraries (thus drivers are mostly .dll's) and then register them to the registry so that the PC knows where to look for its hardware specific -CALL function.

It does not touch the system bios unless it is a motherboard update...

Also, reinstall directx and it'll fix it.

And don't install directx 10 unless you want to get some incompatibility problems, AFAIK the 8500 series are NOT DX10 compatible, thus it would be a risk not worth going for in that case... (since DX10 is still very fresh and there are lots of bugs in it, like it or not.)

and duh, i know this stuff since i'm an active programmer...

I practice am forced to write ASSEMBLY in SPIM.

It's the ASSEMBLY equivalent of safe sex.

Besides: who said anything about C++? Who are you trying to impress? What are you trying to prove?

OK nobody call me stupid pleeeeeeease...

but... how can you Assemble a self-built electronic, i guess it doesn'ty mean machines build the electronics for you, what does he mean?

Does he mean he buys the pieces and assembles them? That isn't too hard is it, ooo im confuzzled?

Oh also Noin i don't think it's very nice when people act very arrogant and basically insult other people who don't know as much about things as them. I mean computer assembly is obviously your job or something, so of course you know lots and he doesn't. You should be nicer and think what it was like when you didn't know much about all this confusing techno stuff, like me....

The bigger the number the better the graphics card and the more cores a processor has the better. If it has more cores and a big number like 3Ghz, then its really really good and shiny!!!!

Sort of. DirectX tells the graphics card HOW to render, based on the program's instructions. Oh, and DX 10 only works on vista, and The Sims 2 only requires DX 9.0c
