If it worked once then it's probably not the drivers. Open your computer and make sure that your graphics card isn't loose. Do any of your other DirectX 9 programs work?

If none of them at all run now then it's your card. Here is very technical: jiggle the card

Also try reinstalling DirectX. I believe that they are up to DirectX 10 now, your drivers should update themselves and it's possible that the newest driver works best with the newest DirectX.

Installing drivers isn't something that the companies leave to the users, it messes with the BIOS and it's better that they do it for you.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but if the card is not working then shouldn't DirectX do software rendering?

      Duhhhh uhhhh duhhhh....

Only in case that it's a motherboard update.

Normal drivers like for sound etc. dont mess around with the bios, they only register specific -call functions in the systems dynamic libraries (thus drivers are mostly .dll's) and then register them to the registry so that the PC knows where to look for its hardware specific -CALL function.

It does not touch the system bios unless it is a motherboard update...

Also, reinstall directx and it'll fix it.

And don't install directx 10 unless you want to get some incompatibility problems, AFAIK the 8500 series are NOT DX10 compatible, thus it would be a risk not worth going for in that case... (since DX10 is still very fresh and there are lots of bugs in it, like it or not.)

and duh, i know this stuff since i'm an active programmer...

      C++? lol kindergarten,

i practice ASSEMBLY with self-built electronics.

I practice am forced to write ASSEMBLY in SPIM.

It's the ASSEMBLY equivalent of safe sex.

Besides: who said anything about C++? Who are you trying to impress? What are you trying to prove?

      Impress?? ROFL

Good joke, if i'd like to impress anyone (or more like awake envy and jealousy mixed with hatred), i'd simply admit that i drive a H2...

      oops, said too much.

Also it's a prerequisite these days to prevent noobs from bashing in an asking "OMG WTF ARE YOU, LYK A PC PIMP?". To prevent this, making a statement of being involved in advanced computer technology fends such groups off.

And i don't have time to argue with such people.

Yet, if you know it, good for you, but the arrogancy in your post is plain stupid.

      Grow up?

Ah yes, and now you'll hear more, "Who are you trying to impress? What are you trying to prove?" - keep repeating the same shit everyone on the internet does, why should you have your own style after all, it's better following a stereotype after all.

LOL. Haha. It's definately not a "PC pimp". It is called a super nerd. Yes, you are a complete super nerd.

And rofl, you said identity was being arrogant? You were the one that kept bragging about how nerdy you are and shit.

Yea, you def have your own style. It's not like millions of kids are nerds these days sitting around learning about computers and such. GJ being unique.

You could never make me jealous or anything buddy. You probably get laid once every blue moon.

I was just questioning the purpose of your tangent. It was not arrogant. How could it be? I claimed nothing.

Why do I get all the weird replies...

Sort of. DirectX tells the graphics card HOW to render, based on the program's instructions. Oh, and DX 10 only works on vista, and The Sims 2 only requires DX 9.0c

      List of things of done

Alright, here's a list of things that I've done to fix my graphics card

      Install new drivers- didn't work
Reinstall the Sims 2- didn't work
Checked to see if graphics card was loose- wasn't loose

now the only other solution I have is get a new graphics card...
This all started when I installed half life 2.. and the Sims hasn't worked ever sense

Uh, then uninstall HL2, and try TS2. Before you go blow $200 on a new card.

      Hmm...

Why don't you take your computer to a hardware specialist, to see if it's your Video Card.

but... how can you Assemble a self-built electronic, i guess it doesn'ty mean machines build the electronics for you, what does he mean?

Does he mean he buys the pieces and assembles them? That isn't too hard is it, ooo im confuzzled?

Oh also Noin i don't think it's very nice when people act very arrogant and basically insult other people who don't know as much about things as them. I mean computer assembly is obviously your job or something, so of course you know lots and he doesn't. You should be nicer and think what it was like when you didn't know much about all this confusing techno stuff, like me....

The bigger the number the better the graphics card and the more cores a processor has the better. If it has more cores and a big number like 3Ghz, then its really really good and shiny!!!!

Assembly is the most Rudimentary language that is used today. Except maybe Binary.

It is meant to be Hardware, and Processor specific. Though i do not see any practical application of it... Unless you build electronic devices. Even then, most people would create their own language for the device.
