      Just doubled up my RAM

Okay so a friend of mine gave me 3gb DDR ram @ 400mhz - although my PC only has 2 slots so could only upgrade from 1GB DDR@333Mhz to 2GBDDR@400Mhz and oh my days my PC is running like a dream now!

I cannot believe I waited this long to upgrade! Has anyone else ever doubled up on RAM? I would recommend doing it for anyone with slow or sluggish PCs.

If I had the space could I have upgraded all 3 chips I had?

My new machine has 4GB, and I love it. Make sure you turn on the 3GB switch if you want to make better use of large RAM.

The number of slots doesn't say anything. It depends on how much total RAM your motherboard can handle and the recommended setup of RAM chips, including keeping in mind dual-channel RAM setup if that's available.

It's all written quite short and to the point in the motherboard documentation.

If the motherboard has 4 slots, it probably can handle 4GB. 2 GB RAM does exist to my knowledge, but ordinary motherboards that can run such a huge amount of RAM, for a low price, I doubt it.
I got 2 GB twin DDR2 RAM myself. Since they're 'twin RAM' they work perfectly together, they are recommended for my mobo, and they're DDR2, so I basically don't need anymore than this. Oh, and it's still two different sticks. Kinda like a dual-core processor. Which I also have.

But I agree, running with 2 GB RAM really makes a difference

      512MB here.

It is sluggish to be honest.

4 gigs would be useless unless you have a 64bit version of Windows. 32 bit can only handle about 3.5GB of actual RAM.

Also, unless you plan on running Crysis and Unreal Tournament III at the same time, 4 GB is overkill. 2 or 3 GB is enough.

      3.5 is more than 3.

Not overkill for pro audio production. I often push the limit on my 4GB machine using Sonar.

If your box is routinely thrashing and using way too much swap space for comfort, upping your RAM is not overkill

I remember when I first started programming when I was much younger (though, Visual Basic hardly counts haha), going from 32MB to 96MB Ram made a world of difference.

It's limited how many people around here are doing pro audio production.
