Sure Vista can play Solitaire and access the internet. It's fine for the average person, most people here in the Tech forum though are more than average users (programmers, networkers...) and Vista can't handle that because of design bugs (aggressive page swapping, unmanaged registry, fragmented hard drive, and overlapping DLLs are the big ones.)
Linux was an operating system build by a college professor (I think) in the early 90s. It's open source so lots of people have looked at it and tweaked it to turn it into one of the most stable operating systems out there. At the low level it's very similar to UNIX. Most servers and anything that needs a lot of security uses Linux.
