      Wireless Keyboard Krap

Got a wireless keyboard and mouse over the holidays and the keyboard will NOT work. The mouse works fine but the keyboard will not work. It has power but it's completely useless. The only button that works on it is the F lock.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be wrong with it and what might be done to fix it? Please help!!! I'm on the verge of smashing the damned thing with a sledge hammer.

      - not synced up to the receiver properly

most wireless mouse / keyboards have a reset button on the back, when pressed will marry up the radio frequencies of the receiver and mouse/keyboard

      - Radio interference
something is interfering with the radio waves
cordless phones are classic for arsing up wireless devices

      Thank you!

I'll give the reset button a try and there is a cordless telephone near my desk. I take it I'll have to experiment with positioning the phone or the reciever or will I have to get the cordless phone out of the room all together?

make sure you read the manual for syncing up the devices with the receiver

Each manufacturer tends to have their own little quirks, and ways of doing it

-press the receiver button for 2 secs, then the mouse reset, then the keyboard reset

-press the receiver button, then mouse, then receiver button again, then keyboard

      -etc, etc.

but it should be spelled out quite clearly in the manual

      As for cordless phones,
it's only a problem with the older (analogue) style phones
particularly if multiple handsets communicate with the same base station
in these circumstances, all standard wireless frequencies can be hogged by the handsets
leaving no free frequencies for the wireless keyboard/mouse

      but it's a rarity
and most modern cordless systems are digital

I would read the manual but the guy (it's actually his keyboard/mouse) threw out the packaging along with the manuals right after he opened the box. The keyboard and mouse sat on my desktop for a few days before he got around to hooking them up.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll make him do all the tinkering when he gets back since he's the bright one who threw out the manuals.

If you know the brand, chances are the manual is online somewhere if you do need to look at it.

      It's me?

I'm too lazy to search for a manual online. He can take it from here. I'm tired of messing with the stupid keyboard.

Well, I figured since you mentioned waiting on him to mess with it, you'd make him look up the manual

      I will.

I was going to be nice and fix it for him but after remembering that he threw out the manual I figured I'd let him do all the dirty work from here.

I've never seen the attraction of wireless keyboards and mice

you can't walk around with them, or use them on your lap properly
a keyboard would rock about and generally suck for typing
mice...up and down your leg you've got plenty of distance, yeah, but side to side?

Both need a flat surface to work properly, and both stay pretty much in the same place

      dunno....

Some people have computers with the USB ports filled and can't afford to attach a mouse and keyboard to them. I have an external hard drive, iPod, printer, and touchscreen attached to my computer. I type with my keyboard in my lap all the time.

The only thing I'd like about the wireless is the fact that there will be less wires clogging up my desktop.

When I draw or paint it'll hopefully be easier to move the keyboard and mouse out of the way. Right now i have to lift the keyboard and wire and move them around the monitor and set them over on the table beside my desk.

With a wireless I'd be less of a hassel for me to do so. I don't type on my lap. I don't think I'd even be able to. ANyone who can do that has got some skills.

I don't see the need for a wireless keyboard, but I do swear by my wireless optical mouse. I was always flipping around the cord and readjusting it. Now it's liberated!

Yeah, the wired mouse is a pain in the ass. If the wire isn't perfect it can always be pulling on the mouse. Plus, with it wireless, I can bring the mouse over to my comfy chair in my room to study or read or whatever, but still be able to change the music or go on my computer. It's quite nice. Wireless keyboard is only really nice because i can easily move the keyboard off my desk to increase desk space.

I use mine on my lap sometimes. The mouse. Or the armrest of my chair.

It helps with carpal tunnel syndrome.
