      Basic video editor

I find myself wanting to do some basic video editing (cut/copy/paste for the most part) of movies from my phone and digital camera, but have no software for it. Does anyone know some decent freeware?

Both phone and camera have some onboard software for cropping, but I'd rather do it on my computer rather than continually move things back and forth, and of course I can't edit multiple vids together.

Windows Movie Maker comes with Windows, I think, and it works quite well as a simple editor. I use it for my juggling videos, it's very easy to trim, arrange, and add music to things. There are also some useful effects like slowdown, speedup, etc.

I don't believe that windows movie maker will encode in H.264.

Quicktime does those simple editing things very nicely. All drag and drop. It's what I used for most of my videos.

I don't know what that means. I think this is part of the reason it's the right program for me

      Thanks guys

Quicktime's free viewer doesn't include the editing functions, but Windows Moviemaker should do the trick. I figured I had something on my machine already that would suffice, it just hadn't come up yet

I would still be interested in any open-source recommendations.

H.264 is the best video codec out there, it makes the videos smaller and have better quality. All the big players in video (except for Microsoft) use it (Apple for both their store and editing software, Pixar, Youtube, Redtube, Flash...)

Is flash free? You can always do the editing in Windows Movie Maker and save it at high quality then convert it to a better codec to make it smaller.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub

Does all the basics. If you need something more fancy, you might consider something else, though. I used to play around with MGI VideoWave but it was years ago, and I had free access to the pricey version cause I worked at the company.

I'd use VirtualDubMod over the original VirtualDub
it's a modified version that includes support for various surround sound formats, Mpeg video, Matroska & Ogg containers plus a few other additions

vDub, being an open source general purpose video dubbing program, was taken and modified
Out of that, came NanDub, and a few other "altered" versions to suit special needs

vDubMod = vDub + all of the extras from all of the different forks

      *nix-wise, you've got
Avidemux (akin to VirtualDub / VirtualDubMod)
Kino (akin to Windows Movie Maker)

I'm assuming that he's on Windows if he tried Quicktime

Looks like VDub has a lot of the older codec, they are really good, the movies just take up a lot of space.

It's weird that Windows is so far behind Apple and the Linux community when it comes to multimedia. You'd think they'd put more effort into it since everyone now has digital cameras. Maybe Windows 7.

Sweet! I didn't know about VDubMod - Will have to check it out.

As long as we're talking about video editors: Is there something in the ubuntu repositories that can play/convert FLV files? I have a greasemonkey script I use to save youtube vids sometimes, and I convert them to other formats.

Windows is far too busy worrying about whether the user is sure about what he/she wants to do.
