      Ipod Issues

Okay so I recently got an itouch.

Everything was well and good, I had stored numerous things on it. I had used up about half of the space. Most of it was audio, and very, very little was "other." Now just yesterday, I plugged in my ipod to see about two-thirds of the memory was being taken up by "other." It practically filled in out of nowhere. Then it displayed, "Ipod is unable to sync because there is not enough free space." I deleted all my podcasts, photos, web history, saved alarms etc etc. Pretty much everything, but it still displays two-thirds of the storage being "other."

I don't know where any of this is coming from. Any ideas? I just deleted most of my bookmarks form youtube and it made no difference in the space. Maybe I should master delete everything from my ipod?

Hmm, i think i understand what is going on.

Its a shame you had to delete all that off of it. But i think that if you want to get rid of it, a system refresh/restore would do it best. You see if i was there i could look and see where these big files are and sort it for you, but it turns out that i'm not.

My suggestion before you do a restore on it is to plug it in and then go into "My Computer", then into the device folder which is the iPod, then hover the mouse over the folders and see which carries the most amount of memory, then you can narrow it down per folder until you find the big files which are taking up the memory. For something like this to happen it is unlikely the files would be scattered, just do it step by step to find the folder with the biggest amount of files in it and you should find the huge file. If you find a folder of files or a big file, report back and tell me, i'll tell you if its delete-worthy.

Empty your email account. More than likely it downloaded an attachment to an email that was really big.

Thats providing she bought the extra applications pack, if she didn't, then it rules out mail completely.

It might be your cache, if iPod touch has a cache. As in like, internet files.

But if it was cache, surely it would have been building up slowly over time? This too me looks like either an accidental file transfer, or maybe a mess up on the iPods end.

Xox, tell us more, then help can be at hand!

But to be quite honest with you, if you have deleted most of your content, i would just do a restore, if your music is still intact, i suggest telling us more and seeing if there is a suitable solution.

Deleting my mail was the first thing I did, As I said I pretty much deleted everything.

Hm, ok LS, I'm currently at "My Computer" and there are like 4 things under "Devices With Removable Storage." One of them is the DVD Drive, the other three are removable disks. So which one of these is the ipod?

For the record, I'm a noob with PC things.

Okay, your iPod should be a device that says "iPod" or whatever you named it, it should be in "My Computer" if its plugged in, but if it isn't showing up then there may be some problems in terms of connection and you may need to solve the problem using the iPod itself which is not too hard.

Let me know if you can find the iPod device, if you can, double click it and enter the device, just like you'd double click "My Documents" to view your documents.

I'll be here every step of the way

Just plugged it out, and plugged it back in. It's not showing up. I guess there are some connection problems here.

And thanks LS, I really appreciate it.

Don't worry about it, its not a problem.

Erm, okay, i take that its not showing up in iTunes either?

Did you say it brought up a message saying it cannot sync because there is not enough memory?

Does it still do this upon connecting if so, does it do anything at all?

If not, i may have a solution. I'll be watching this thread, so i won't be going nowhere.

It shows up on Itunes, and the same "Songs/Photos could not be synced because there is not enough memory" shows up. But it's not showing up on "My Computer."

Okay, this should be a bit easier then.

You do still have your files on the iPod right? Like your music?

Right, anyways, i know that it says that a lot of the storage taken up is "Other", these are usually files which have been added by the user, however there can be an odd problem that occurs.

Now, the thing you need to do first is to stop iTunes from trying to sync your photos and stuff to your iPod straight away upon connecting.

So when you plug it in, if it can stay plugged in, go to the left of iTunes and click your iPod. Then in the main screen where it shows all the details of your iPod, click the "Photo's" tab and where it says "Sync Photos From.." untick the tick box and this should stop it from trying to sync the photos and coming up with that message. You can always turn it back on later.

I have a hunch of what it could be, do you have a large photo library by any chance that you may have put on your iPod? Because if you do, sometimes if the setting is on, it will transfer all the full size photos onto your iPod anyways as a sort of backup set of files.

Just give me the details of what you know is on your iPod, give me a list, it should help em narrow things down. It doesn't have to be specific, but just a vague outline of whats taking up how much space and so on.

Heres a list of exactly everything I have on my ipod
      - Audio (495 songs)
      - 2 Alarms
      - Just a couple of notes.
      - 5 Bookmarks on youtube.

I actually had a bunch of photos on the ipod, and deleted all of them previously. Now I checked off all the boxes so that it doesn't attempt to sync them in. Although when I plug it in, it still says "Optimizing Photos For Your Ipod." But no photos do get stored.

Another possible weird thing is, one of my personal photos was my wallpaper, and when I deleted all my photos, it didn't delete the wallpaper one; and is still my wallpaper.

And two-thirds of the memory is still being taken up by "Other." The rest is Audio.

The wallpaper is stored in the iPod until it is changed, it copies when you set the image as the wallpaper and when you delete the original image there will always be that copy until you change the wallpaper again.

Okay, i must ask a final question, you see, the problem is that i cannot actually look into your iPod and see what is up, i could probably fix it for you if i were there. But you probably want the easiest and quickest option. I hate to say it, but i think the best thing you can do is go on the "Summary" Tab and click "Restore" and it'll wipe it clean. Its probably the best thing you can do, but i'd only do this as long as you can easily get your music back on fairly easily, but its up to you.

You see, it should work, but we can then tell whether or not its the iPod, because if you do a restore it should wipe it, and if the other files are still there after the restore then we are definitely sure that it is not something on the iPods end. If files are still present after the restore it is likely that there are some files stored that were added outside iTunes, but i do not know as of yet. But doing a restore on your iPod seems like the best option for now.

Sorry i couldn't be more helpful, but that should clear the files off, then you'll just have to put your music and photos etc back on, thats the only downside

Okay, about to restore now, I'm unchecking all the playlists's that were checked off.

It's not a big deal since I didn't have all that stored on the ipod anyway. I will report back when I'm done.

Ok, great stuff, well let me know whether there is still that "Other" chunk on your iPod. If it still it, we may need to take it a step further. Thats after you have restored of course.

Okay, first attempt to restore and it said, "The ipod could not be restored because an unknown error occurred."

      2nd attempt going on now.

      Edit: The restoring is done..

Edit 2 - Okay I have done the restore and everything is well now. Thanks a lot LS!

FYI, the iTouch is set up a little bit differently than other iPods, it will not show up as a flash drive on either PC or Mac.

To see what's on your iTouch you have to use an FTP client, but it only works if it's jailbroken.

No problem at all. Sorry i couldn't find a more effective way, like getting rid of the files direct. But i'm glad all is cool with it now

      Thanks anyway.

I wonder if it's safe to put my photos back on?

Yeah, I'm sure that it's fine. They're your photos right? It's possible to embed extra stuff in certain file types.

Yup, I was just afraid that they would take up all the space again.. Assuming that is what caused it.
