Ubuntu 2

Okay, if I install Ubuntu, and I have an "Instant Wireless LAN Monitor" i think, (Obviously, not big into hardware,,,) and I have it all installed as a program kind of thing, and I migrate to Ubuntu, will I still be able to use the internet thing? It's basically a card, but in a USB plug thing. Acts the same as a card, i think.

Hey guys, I'm back. Feels good man

Most probably, yes
although without a make & model number I can't say for sure

but seriously
the best way to see if everything works and is to your liking, is to try it

you could a million and one questions (and even get a million and one answers) and still be no wiser. If you're interested, just try it

if you have concerns or reservations, you may want to install via Wubi
This installs a linux operating system on a virtual hard disk within your existing windows partition
(never used it personally, but the idea is to make it easier to test out linux without fiddling around with disk partitions - just burn the CD, run it under windows and follow the prompts)
If you want to get rid of it, just uninstall via Windows's "add/remove programs"

I was thinking about trying Virtualbox, bt on this computer, (8 year old Gateway...) the amount of RAM it takes and the time it takes to download Ubuntu (8 hours! ), and my knowledge of partions (0% lulz...) it would just kill my computer. But, I could say that I plugged it in to a different computer and it didn't work so... looks like Ubuntu's out for a while. But I could try virtualbox.

Ubuntu offers a Linux Live version. You download it to a CD and run it from there, no partitioning or hard drive interfacing at all.

It shouldn't take 8 hours to download the iso, more like 2.

Ubuntu also has something called Wubi, which lets you install Ubuntu on a Windows machine without repartitioning your drive. I've never used it (because I don't use Windows or Ubuntu), but it's said to work pretty well. The LiveCD would be even slower on the OP's old Gateway than a virtual machine, so I suggest giving Wubi a try.
