Before the icon goes away, click on your anti-virus, which I am sure you have, because you are intelligent

If you have another computer (or a friend) that has a good AV installed, see if you can get it to create a boot CD and just run it.

Also, remember that system restore (the most useless feature ever) will happily back up your virus. I say turn that shit off, personally.

if you dont have a anti virus then beforre the icon goes away go on the internet. Go to google and search microsoft one live care then go to the microsoft websit and download and install the 90day trial. once installed search for updates. The run the full systrm scan. after doing this i recomend getting norton 2008.

AVG is a pretty good freeware anti-virus.

Better yet, get rid of Windoze altogether. Almost all malware is written for the Windoze platform.

go to www.mininova.org and type in avg 8.0 Download a torrent which has got lots of seeds and good comments and download, scan and remove. I can't afford to pay £50 to buy it.

AVG has a free edition that works just fine. AntiVir is good too.

Also, why suggest he use more P2P if he's obviously lacking the skill to protect his computer of basic threats? Doesn't make any sense. It's probably gonna get fucked up even worse if he starts using torrents as well.

You would have to be real evil to put a virus in a anti virus torrent.

      Fixed.

Also, it sounded to me like he hasn't installed any security updates since he installed Windows and doesn't have any sort of firewall so naturally it's just a matter of minutes until somebody uses a random security hole to sneak a snuke in his computer.

Avast is also an excellent freeware anti-virus program.

Find out from the internet what the virus' name is. Then Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the running task list. Force Quit the task. If you're lucky there is only one program and it's not a pair. Once that virus isn't running anymore, do a search for it, and shift-delete it. You might need to log in as a superuser (or windows equiv) to do that.
