ok, before you get a torrent of useless crap

      CD-R is write once only
once it's written, that's it - the data's on there for good

CD-RW, on the other hand, can be erased
I'm not sure if Windows can do it natively

Which do you have? (It should say on the face of the CD)
      CD-R or CD-RW?

      *edit*
Oh, and CD's (and dvd's / hd-dvd / bluray / etc.) are optical, not magnetic
so magnets have no effect on them
The "burning" comes from a laser burning tiny holes in the surface (burned hole = 1, non-burned bit = 0)

On CD-RW, there's a film of melty stuff
"erasing" a CD-RW, means melting the melty stuff, so it fills up the previous write's holes
