      Files Refuse To Budge

OK so I've got me a CD-R with some files on it. I've put things on it and taken copies of them off again with no trouble in the past. Today I wanted to get some of the music on my PC onto my Xbox 360, so I got the CD and tried deleting all the stuff on it but I was told that it was not allowed because the files were read-only.

I've tried cutting and pasting them into My Docs but I can't get them off the CD. I used Ashampoo WinOptimizer 5 to wipe them but it told me that nothing could be wiped because they were either password protected, read-only or in use in another program. I can't un-read-only them because my access is denied.

I then resorted to rubbing magnets all over the CD and - wouldn't you know it? - they're still there like some kind of foreign relative who's had sex with a barnacle.

Can anything be done at all? Is my CD doomed? Should I evwen be using a CD-R to get music onto my '360?

ok, before you get a torrent of useless crap

      CD-R is write once only
once it's written, that's it - the data's on there for good

CD-RW, on the other hand, can be erased
I'm not sure if Windows can do it natively

Which do you have? (It should say on the face of the CD)
      CD-R or CD-RW?

      *edit*
Oh, and CD's (and dvd's / hd-dvd / bluray / etc.) are optical, not magnetic
so magnets have no effect on them
The "burning" comes from a laser burning tiny holes in the surface (burned hole = 1, non-burned bit = 0)

On CD-RW, there's a film of melty stuff
"erasing" a CD-RW, means melting the melty stuff, so it fills up the previous write's holes

      yeah, just copy it

(never owned an xbox, so I'm assuming there's no special voodoo needed just to copy stuff onto it)

Yeah. I assumed it'd be OK if it's in .mp3 or something nice.

      OK. Case closed.

      careful,
most "normal" CD players can't read rewritables

Rewritables can only be read back in other rewritables

      I'll bear that in mind

CD-RWs for backups and stuff (or better still, USB)
      CD-Rs for music

Ynot is wrong about a technical post

CDs are optical, not magnetic. CD-Rs are written by the heat of the laser changing the chemical properties of them. Magnets won't do a thing no matter how powerful (unless it's strong enough to overpower the nuclear strong force )

      well, you're forgiven
in a rare moment, I forgot my dry humour /stroke/ suspense building characteristic poly-ellipse sentence ending....
which was probably what threw you

also, I just found out I've never said the word "s-o-rry", ever
(I was looking for any thread where I'd admitted a fault)

      I've never said s-o-rry
      and I'm never going to!!

      *edit*
      well, I didn't believe it
and apparently, according to the forum search, no-one has said sorry, ever

      BUG

      *edit 2*
      not "wrong" per se
but I did find a thread where the guy didn't seem to impressed

The search does seem to look through the entire post because when I searched "sorry" nothing came up even though you wrote it in the post above
