      The Function key

It's been bothering that only a fraction of the Fn+<insert key here> combinations are used on my computer.

Is there anyway to program these combinations so that I can use them to perform tasks or open programs?

      Example

      Fn+D : start disk defragmentation

      Fn+F : start firefox

      Thanks in advance.

If you create a shortcut (or use an existing one such as those on the Desktop or in the Start Menu), you can add a key combination to launch it by right clicking on it, and selecting properties.

Though you might also need to alter the shortcut path as well if you want to launch programs to do specific things. For instance, if you wanted to launch a defragmentation program and then have it immediately start defragmenting a hard drive you would need to add a switch to the shortcut, though this depends on the program.

Hmm, when I try that, it doesn't put in Fn+F, although that's what I press. It puts in Ctrl+Alt+F. I tried using Fn+F anyways after setting it, but it didn't work.

I'm using Vista if that's any help.

      It's a laptop thing.

Oh, that function key I would think the shortcuts would be different depending on the manufacturer.

The point is I want to program those shortcuts to my liking.

If I had to guess I'd say properties.

Is there Quicksilver for PC? You could always download that.

Yeah, give Launchy a try. I think that's the Quicksilver equivalent on PC, I have it but don't use it much.

Yeah, I don't think Windows will recognise the Fn key as it's not a standard key. Laptops actually require special software to recognise when it's pressed.
