Why can't laptops be cheaper?! I need something under $1000! And that doesn't mean like $999

emm, in uk, you can get a really good laptop (in my eyes) for about 400£ that would get you 2GHz, and 2Gb of ram and a decent hard drive. so thats about $600 am i right?

Yes, 400£ is almost exactly US$600 (it's about C$720 and AU$860) with today's exchange rates, and laptops with modern specs are certainly available for less than 1000 USD.

Oh one more thing I forgot to address in my previous post on people criticizing Apple without researching the facts first: even if the one-button mouse myth were true, it has nothing to do with this thread. Laptops don't come with mice. If you want to use one though, you can plug a multi-button mouse into a laptop, regardless of whether or not it's made by Apple. Sheesh. Besides, Apple laptops have supported clicking the trackpad with multiple fingers since they released the MacBook Pro three years ago.

On desktops, the old one-button mouse was a stylistic preference (and context menus could be brought up by control-clicking), but Apple has used the more conventional multibutton mouse (they call it the "Mighty Mouse") since 2005. Besides, even before the Mighty Mouse came out, people who preferred two or three button mice just plugged in a two or three button mouse. It wasn't that hard...

Oh slayer, check out the Lenovo ThinkPad R series. You can get a powerful and well-built (i.e. long-lasting) machine for a relatively inexpensive price.

So it would actually be cheaper for me to purchase a laptop in the UK than here?

I didn't think laptops would cost so much...

I mean, I can buy a PC tower thing for like $400 and then everything would be pretty cheap.

Not a good one, a high end computer is the same price as a high end laptop, just a little less because they have smaller batteries and fullsize graphics cards.

a laptop will always be more expensive than an equivalently spec'd desktop system

it's a single custom-made board (no daughter boards)
everything in a desktop machine is mass produced, off-the-shelf hardware
everything in a laptop (except maybe the lid hinges) is bespoke to that laptop range

People are dissing Dell and SUGGESTING Mac? That's just wrong.

Not saying Dell are good, of course, but in comparison ... *ahem*

Okay, Slayer, walk me through EVERYTHING you'll want to do with this.

When you say video editing and photoshop, do you mean home video editing and playing around with images, or high level graphical design?

      Will you ever play games?

How big do you want the screen to be (or at least what's the largest/smallest you'd go), does it need to work with blu-rays (if so, do you only want to play them, or write them)

What resolution would you want to work with? eg 16x9, True HD, or any specific sizes?

Is noise a concern, or is cooling more important? Do you want both?

Does it definitely HAVE to be a laptop? Normal desktop computers can be gotten for cheaper, and will generally run better, but obviously are not as portable.

Will you be running multiple applications at any time, or normally just one or two things at once?

How long do you normally use it on a day to day basis?

Tell me that, and any other points you think are important, and I'll try and get you a really good comp

I had a dell for a month. Crashed 5 times.
I've had my new mac for a month. Never crashed.
Really, I just like mac's interface and features better. Considering I have this, I shouldn't be needing a new computer for a while.
(that doesn't mean I'm not going to build a gaming rig and sell it for fun, though.)
      I'm back!
