      ok,
      - delete sda4
      - resize sda3 to 110Gb (or so)
      - run the installer
      - when you get to the partitioning stage again, there should be a new option "Use largest contiguous free space") - select that, and install

Max of 4 partitions is a hard limit, set by the BIOS
there is absolutely no way around this, and is the same across all OSs
(this is why when you first ran the installer, your only options were to overwrite existing partitions)
Fortunately, a partition can hold multiple "virtual partitions" - a so called extended partition

Deleting sda4 reduces your partitions down to 3
meaning Ubuntu can install in a fourth, extended partition

In this extended partition, you'll have the root file system and the swap partition

Alrighty, what about the swap partition?

Following what MoS said, I have 3 gigs of RAM. So should I make a 3 gig Swap Partition or is that too large?

(Also, while not to get ahead of myself too much, once 7.10 is installed, how easy is it to update it to the most recent version?)

      don't worry about the swap
Ubuntu will handle it for you automatically

just get enough free space, and run the installer

      dead easy
but how fast is your internet connection?

Btw, if you're going to upgrade to the latest release (intrepid)
assuming you can write CDs, it's going to be quicker to just download the ISO and burn to disk

Is this right? It seems to be doing more than asked to. I thought we didn't want the file system moving to the right?

      should be fine
if it needs moving, it'll be moved (technical - to do with disk block boundaries....)
