Handbrake is the best, Requires VLC since the latest release, but that's free too. It uses ffmpeg, so you get incredible compression.

It entirely depends on what you're trying to do

      1) Copy a DVD
Rip the copy protection & region coding out of a DVD
and burn it back to a blank disk

then use DVD Decrypter or FabDVD
and burn it back to a disk using any decent DVD authoring program

      2) Encode to XviD / H.264
Rip the DVD, and encode it to an MPEG video

      Then use Handbrake

Use Handbrake. H.264 encoding is the best out there, and iTunes is the best out there for it.

Just pay for the DVD's to help make sure the people who make DVD's will keep making DVD's.

      Errr....
He has the DVD in his hand, so it's already bought & paid for

he wants to rip it onto his machine (media centre? portable video player? backup / archive?)

      Nought wrong with ripping DVD's
I do it all the time

A lot of people don't want little plastic discs
      not for music
      not for movies

If that's all it is, it's pretty innocent, but people who do that stuff for lots of their friends and family members are helping to kill the movie industry.

I think second-class remakes of classics, crappy sequels designed to cash in on a good original and rehashed storylines that barely venture on new territory are a bigger threat than one man and his vob ripper....

the music and film industry are killing themselves

Oh, and the movie industry complaining about pirates is a little hypocritical, to say the least

Hollywood started as "pirate" film production group who refused to pay the patent licenses imposed by Edison for his inventions - the moving picture camera and celluloid film

Hollywood has plenty of money. A little bit of piracy is no big deal. Also, iTunes sells movies for like 3.99, DVDs cost like 9.99. Do you really think that the little piece of plastic costs 4.00 to make? Guess again, they make them for about a nickel apiece.

It's the large numbers of "one man" that could be a problem. I guess it hasn't crashed the industry yet. I hope things don't get worse.

It's not Hollywood I am concerned about. I hope every film corporation in that plastic town goes out of business. They are an insult to art itself. (There are exceptions, of course, but I felt like venting.) It is the independent film makers that concern me. It is very hard to get a quality movie made without getting in good with big Hollywood corporations. I commend those who pull it off, especially since they are the people who seem more obsessed with artistic quality than money. I don't want the independent artists turning their backs on what they are great at because they can't get independent financial backing any more.
