Well, it came out today, anyone else upgrading? I didn't get a chance to look at the changes, but it just seems like the Software Center, and other misc stuff. I heard something about the notification system though, so I guess I'll just have to see. Currently downloading the alternate install ISO from a torrent. Way faster than trying to do it through the update manager.

Been on Karmic since Alpha 3 Usual changes and version revs (way too many changes to list) Linux 2.6.31 Gnome 2.28 Xorg 7.4 Ubuntu specific - Ubuntu One (cloud storage thing) - Software store (redone add/remove programs) - xsplash in place of usplash (x now starts very early in the boot process, this coupled with KMS makes for a very nice, plymouth style, boot process - Unification of ALSA & pulseaudio controls into single GUI interface - a whole heap of GUI changes

That makes me a happy panda! I need to totally reinstall Ubuntu, actually. I didn't give it enough hard drive space because I was limited on drive space when I installed it, but now that I have an external drive... Booyah! Repartitioning time. I actually ran into some problems with that in Florida this year. Trying to record with Audacity in Ubuntu, and it ran out of disk space in the Linux partition halfway through a speech. I wound up having to have the speaker re-deliver the first half of the message so I could get it recorded. Still wound up corrupting the last five minutes somehow, when I put the parts together in Windows.

The new notification systems are pretty strange, I'm starting to get used to them being down a bit, but they take forever to go away. I think Ubuntu 9.10 queues the messages, instead of making the next one replace the last one. Ubuntu One seems kind of pointless, like a Dropbox that only works with Ubuntu ._.

Ubuntu One seems kind of pointless, like a Dropbox that only works with Ubuntu ._. Storage is the first of many services to be offered so yes, at the moment it's just a dropbox clone, but future features are planned

So if I install this through the update manager, will I lose all the stuff on my Ubuntu partition? Or will it save all my stuff?

Upgrading from previous versions won't alter any personal files or settings Open update manager, and there should be a button at the top you can click to upgrade to the next version It'll guide you through

EDIT: It's too bad Cloud One only offers 2 GB of free storage. I think one of those reviews Ynot posted said that Microsoft's Coud computing thing (i forget what it's called) offers 25 GB of free storage.

Never record audio for long speeches with Audacity, it saves it uncompressed. Use a more advanced program that compresses as it goes. Yeah, the resulting files are HUGE. I didn't realize till after. Can you recommend a better program that's open-source? I've got Kristal, but it's a pain in the neck to figure out, with crappy documentation.

Why does it have to be open source? If you're doing professional work, you need a professional tool. Do you have a computer other than your Linux box that you can use? The software you want is called SoundBooth. It's part of CS4, but obviously it's OSX and Windows only. I doubt it will run on Wine. It's kind of a combination of Audacity and iMovie's sound editor, although far more advanced than either one of them. It's got a high learning curve, but once you get used to it, it's very streamlined for those kind of work loads.

They released the Xubuntu 9.10 as well. Subtle differences, yes. But I prefer Xubuntu.

My main OS is Vista, I just run Ubuntu as a dual-boot for insecure wireless hotspots and random ventures into learning more about Linux. Though I do plan on buying a Macbook Pro in a few months. Thing is, I really don't require such software very often; only about once a year. Other than that one solid week out of the year, I do no audio recording or editing whatsoever. So I was thinking more of something that didn't cost money. Nevertheless, I'll look into Soundbooth, as I was planning to grab the whole Adobe Suite CS4 when I got my Macbook Pro anyway.

(assuming *nix) mp3 recording is easy you can record directly (encoding on the fly) just by piping the sound into lame something_that_makes_a_sound | lame -x - output.mp3
