I just try to play the video.
I haven't even attempted editing anything yet.

well, make sure you have all the video codecs and things

This is a package list from my install
      (assuming Karmic)
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg libavcodec-extra-52 libavdevice-extra-52 libavformat-extra-52 libavutil-extra-49 libpostproc-extra-51 libswscale-extra-0 gstreamer0.10-nice gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio

      It's still locking up.
It played the video, but the audio was messed up, and then it just froze up on me.
Also, I noticed that the system load shot up.

I use Adobe Premiere Elements. It does a lot of basic stuff you'd like to do with YouTube videos. If you're rich, get After Effects instead.
