      High Def Vs. Standard Def

I'm currently moving my entire media library over to Hi-Def
and Ye Gods, it's a mixed blessing

I hadn't realised Lawrence Fishburne had such a.....chiseled face

      Well,
It makes everyone on screen 10% uglier

Like when classic cinema films uses soft focus on the actresses
      this is the complete opposite

I love HD. I didn't mind watching Matrix in HD at all. Quite the opposite, I enjoyed it even more. It's been the same with all HD material I've seen so far. Just makes it better. The only real problem is that it takes up so much space... when you're not using blueray.

Might also want to try underworld, it looks so much better on Bluray for obvious reasons:

Hehe, yeah, I've already got that one
I actually liked the film for itself. The outfit was just a bonus. Tough... if I am to be quite honest I got it because I saw a clip on mythbusters, and there it wasn't the story that impressed

I haven't really noticed much of a difference with Underworld (the first film)

      1.4Gb AVI (XviD) @ 704x288
      http://www.snoopy.force9.co.uk/underworld-sd.png

      2.0Gb MP4 (H.264) @ 1280x544
      http://www.snoopy.force9.co.uk/underworld-hd.png

I'm seeing the most difference with the high budget films
(Matrix had 3x the budget of Underworld)

I'm thinking they had the cash up front to use better quality recording film - hence the quality is preserved when going to HD

With lower budget films, the differences are negligible

Strangely the underworld sd version has more detail on the woman's face. They probably put more effort into the soft focus and everything for the hd version (which is what it looks like the editors of the matrix should have done).

      3 guesses.....

I have no desire to own little plastic discs
I have no use for them
They are (at best) in intermediate format

So, a combination of bittorrent and renting, ripping & returning from Blockbusters

That's my usual way, so much higher quality if I rip them myself than if I get them from somewhere else. Most things I find are avi or mpg, H.264 has been the standard for how long?

I notice the difference more in the darker scenes than the lighter scenes.

      I asked how not why

I'm assuming you mean you're doing it because you don't want them on CD and are storing them on an HD of some sorts? Dumb ass question here, but I'm going to ask it anyway - are you ripping HD disks to start with, or SD and upscaling it?

You can find most things in 1080p H.264 now. File sizes are commonly 8 GB, though it varies in both directions. May I ask what software and settings you're using for ripping? I've never really gotten it right.

Handbrake - AppleTV settings. For certain movies I adjust them myself if I know something else will be better. I guess it's all about knowing what each option means, if you wiki each option you should get some understanding to what they do. I usually de interlace movies that I know were originally done in SD, other than that I usually just leave the settings alone.

I don't really have much to add to the thread, other than that Mila Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale have two of the most gorgeous faces in film, right now, so HD can only make them look better.

Laurence Fishburne, on the other hand; he's always had a crater-face. Heh.

pretty much the only high def tv i see is hockey on my parents' set - it's so clear! there's a huge difference when i switch to the same channel in standard. i feel like i have less reason to splurge on buying a ticket to a game.
