      Nokia N900 or Droid?

So, I will get some newfangled smart phone sometime within the next month or so. The question is, which one? I'm staying away from the iPhone for a number of reasons. First of all, it lacks a real keyboard, and I've tried typing on that stupid thing, and it's just not that much fun. But also, I've got a psychological barrier keeping me from it. I dunno, something about combining the douchebaggery of apple with the evilness of AT&T just doesn't sit right with me.

I went into a verizon store and played around with the new droid phone. It was ok, but kind of hard to get used to, mainly from having zero experience with phones that are a lot more than... phones. Seemed I had to hit the touchscreen higher than I would intuitively think, and it was not super intuitive. But I don't know how much of it is just needing to get used to it.

The N900, on the other hand, isn't out yet, but I am looking forward to playing around with it. I don't know if it has a rich set of apps like iphone or google, but then again, it can probably handle virtually any open source application it can render on screen.

So, would anyone be able to elucidate me on which of those phones they prefer and why? And maybe on which phone is better for what kind of person? I mean, it seems they all have anything anyone would want, and so it probably comes down to the quality of the hardware and user interface, the coverage (droid probably wins on that, since Nokia's 3G coverage is the T-mobile one, which is behind even AT&T, from what I hear) and price....

      Thanks!

I'd definitely go for the N900
Not for any phone usability reasons (which may not be that helpful to you) but for software reasons

The N900 runs on Maemo 5, which is absolutely superb

Some stuff that I'm personally interested in are:
It features several new technologies, including the Tracker search system, PulseAudio (replacing ESD), the OHM hardware management daemon, the gUPnP UPnP framework, enhanced location framework, and Upstart. Several existing technologies have also been updated, including Gecko, BlueZ, gstreamer (will include OpenMAX), GTK+, and Telepathy
Unlike most smartphones, the end-user is able to gain root access by issuing the command "sudo gainroot" in the terminal in Maemo 5. The device does not need to be unlocked or jailbroken in order to install an unsupported application

I'd personally go with the Droid, just because I'm a fan of the Android OS, and I suspect that'll have a better selection of apps in the long run (and probably at release as well). The N900 does look like an excellent phone though, so if you don't really love the Droid, it's probably better for you to wait and see what the N900 is like when it's out. Even if that isn't as excellent if it seems like it'll be, there will probably be many new and better smartphones out by then, at the rate they're releasing them these days.

The N900 will probably cost you several hundred more, so that's worth considering. Can't say anything about coverage since that varies so much based on location.

The N900 is basically a continuation of the N8xx series, right? Only obviously updated and with telephone capability. I'd definitely say N900 then, just because you'll be able to do just about anything you can think of with it. Possibilities seem pretty much endless, when you take into consideration the Linux distro it runs.

Hehe so since the N900 doesn't seem to be available anywhere right now, outside the Nokia store, I tried to order it online from their website. Tried being the key word - what an atrocious customer experience!

I got a couple of "Authorization Failed" messages. I call their line, and they mention the sensitivity of their systems (the address is case-sensitive, etc.) They also mention that I shouldn't try again without waiting 3-5 days because after 3 attempts, they'll flag me as fraud.

The lady informed me of how much they value security and take all possible measures to avoid fraud... and then in the next breath, she told me that if I give her my CC over the phone, she can place the order for me. I had to laugh at the irony.

I might try one more time once my pending crap goes away from my bank accounts, and copy/paste the stupid thing perfectly... Or I'll just pre-order it on Amazon and wait (it's definitely the slightly cheaper and more reliable route).

*sigh* why do they make it so hard to give them money.
