      Tell me about installing Linux

On and old iBook G4, 768 MB RAM, 1.33 GHz processor.
Probably going to go with Ubuntu, but that's not the problem.
How can I run it side by side mac OS x?
      Should I go with Ubuntu?
How do I install it without a disc?
I know I could probably google this, but I love you all so much.

PowerPC port of Ubuntu is here

      Direct link to CD image
      http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/rele...op-powerpc.iso

Burn ISO image to a blank CD

I note you've asked about installing without a CD
It's easiest by far if you can just install from the CD
(just borrow someone's USB cd drive if you have to)

      However,
info on installation without using a CD

(I've never actually installed a linux distro without using a burnt CD, so I don't think I'll be a lot of help)

Would you happen to know of a virtual machine that runs on PowerPC?

using a virtual machine on that laptop is probably not an ideal solution (too underpowered)

I'd really recommend a native install

Especially the G4, it's not much of a powerhouse. It was fast for it's time, but it's 5 years old.

I've followed one of those guides to install ubuntu with a memory stick, it's pretty straight forward.

      Oh.
I guess I'll wait until next year. I'm going to get a macbook pro with the college discount, because currently, I'm spending all my money on my phone bill and I dont want anything less then the 15'' macbook pro.
I'll either run it with a virtual machine on the new macbook, or I'll use the macbook for mac and this iBook for linux.

Bootcamp them instead, VMs aren't all that great.

Yeah, it says that it's Windows in bootcamp, but it doesn't know the difference If you have Windows too, you have OSX and Windows, but if you click on Windows, you get brought to GRUB

You can use any linux distro you want (if it has support for PPC)

I'd suggest Ubuntu, only because you will get lots of help online,
but in essence, any linux distro that supports PPC will do (it's down to personal preference)

Ubuntu is the easiest to use in my opinion.

      BUMP
I'm currently trying to install ubuntu on my ps3.
I forgot (must be the ganga) that my ps3 can't read discs, so after I spent an hour downloading and burning I got pretty pissed.
I have to install it on a flash drive/usb stick, but i can't find a guide that a noob like myself can follow. Any advice?
Oh, and I would appreciate a quick reply because once my high wears off i'm probably going to start breaking things on my ps3.

That's not my problem, I need to get it onto a flash drive becuase my ps3 cant read discs. I'm planning on installing a VNC server on ubuntu when I hopefully get it on the ps3 so I can use my laptop keyboard and mouse and cd drive, but it's not looking good right now.

If you don't mind my asking: If your goal is to get Ubuntu onto a laptop, why would you buy an Apple laptop? Seems to me like you're paying a premium for no reason here. You might as well get a laptop from System76. They handle the mucky "getting all the hardware to work" part for you, and it's been absolutely solid for me.

I'd buy a macbook pro (to use as a mac) and then install ubuntu on this laptop (iBook G4).
Alright, I think I'm going to give up. I tried installing it on VirtualPC by downloading and burning Ubuntu 8.10 to a disc, but it doesn't even recognize that i put a disc with linux in.
