Thread: Is the iPhone worth it?

Well I don't have an iPhone but I have an Ipod touch (I'm typing on it now) andthere are a number of similarities. The battery recharges (fairly fast on the touch) but the battery has to be replaced at a service center (apple store, maybe Best buy). It can't run simultaneous apps. It can store full length
movies, it's all a matter of how much hard drive space you have. I have a 64 gig so I can store a good 10 movies . The app store on Itunes has about 800 trillion apps, basically there's an app for everything. Lots of games that don't suck too, many are free or have a free version.

Basically my understanding of the iPhone is it's an iPod touch with phone, texting, and 3g mobile Internet.

When the next major OS version comes out, that should be changed. There is a list of some of the features here, and one includes multitasking.

I don't own an iPhone, but I went through the whole "Should I? Shouldn't I? iPhone? iTouch?" thing a year or so back, and determined that the benefits did not justify the costs. I settled on 1) a netbook w/ 10" screen and touch-typable keyboard, which cost less than an iTouch and 2) another dumbphone (or half-bright phone, you might say) which cost me $0 up front and $20-30 less per month than an iPhone, not counting the cost of apps. Pretty much any situation where I have access to wifi, I can whip out the netbook and have full PC functionality, whereas for a quick google or google maps look-up, or browsing on my morning train, the phone is more than sufficient. The Walkman phone also has better call quality (hello, it's a phone), takes better pictures and video, and serves as a better music player (through headphones or built-in speakers) than the current iPhone, and actually has impressive multitasking, shortcuts and notifications if you debrand. Also, I can skip town for three days without the charger and still have juice on the trip back.

Of the two people I interact with daily who have iPhones, the owner & GM at work, the GM hates it and the owner thinks it's "pretty good." The only other person I've heard from directly in any detail loves his, but he's a rather non-credible trendwhore.

I love my iphone. It has been worth every penny. I keep in better contact with people because I genuinely enjoy using it, and I have found many useful apps and fun new games. Plus it's actually helping me to stick to my diet. Instead of stopping at taco bell on my way home from school and spending $7 on junk food that I will enjoy for 15 minutes, feel guilty about, and dispose of the next day...I find myself saying..."no...don't do it...what a waste! I could find several awesome new .99 cent iphone apps or a new $2.99 game that I can get hours of enjoyment out of!" It has actually saved me from wasting money on fast food many times. And by the time I get home the compulsive eating/spending urge is gone.

I don't have the iPhone, so I can't comment on that, but I do have the Motorola Milestone, which is the European version of the Droid, so I'll comment on that. It's a good phone with excellent multimedia capabilities, though (like the iPhone) it only supports h.264 and MPEG4 video, so it's likely you'll have to convert movies to watch them.
There are a lot of apps for Android too, so you won't feel any lack in that department, and having an hardware qwerty keyboard is really nice. Also, there's no itunes requrement or anything like that, it can act just like a regular memory stick which makes it easy to transfer music and videofiles and stuff.
The only downside is that Android doesn't support tethering, so if you want to use you phone for internet on your laptop, it's probably not the right phone for you.
btw: On the droid you can change the battery, I myself have two extra batteries and a charger for them, though I don't really need it. The battery time is pretty good. It's enough for three days of surfing the web in the breaks.
