      Question What is the Point?

First of all, it's nice to meet every one in this community for the first time (first post!).

I was wondering what the underlying idea of each method is. What I mean is that MILD, DILD, RCILD, ect all seem to have to do with the idea of increasing your logic and awareness within the dreamstate. WILD seems to be essentially not consciously moving your external body while retaining just enough mental awareness to stay lucid through the process of falling asleep. I want to know what your opinions are on what are the (for lack of a better term) underlying elements and ideas that make up the main techniques.

      Thanks,
      TheNinja

      Heya, welcome to DV.

To build on what you have, there are really only two techniques out there (DILD and WILD), each with its respective offshoots.

You've got WILD pegged pretty well. The definition I tend to use for the technique is "to fall asleep, into a dream state, while retaining consciousness." Moving isn't too much of an issue as long as you can get to sleep in the end. In general, you don't need much more than determination and the right mindset to WILD. DILDs, on the other hand, aren't so cut and dry.

Straight DILDs rely on your awareness, which is a tricky thing to regulate, especially at first. RCs are a good way of keeping it at the level it needs to be, but you can always be more thorough and go through life constantly aware. To be fair, the latter isn't exactly easy, but it's arguably the best way to have consistent DILDs.

Then you get into all the other methods which share the same basic principles as these two but have their own differentiating characteristics. But the important things to remember are that awareness is critical for most DILD methods and it's impossible to WILD if you can't fall asleep.

Thanks. Of course I can't stay awake in WILD, but I digress.

Does anyone else have a differing opinion on these techniques?

Mzzk hit the nail on the head.

I will say that learning to wild is quite tuff, after 4 months and no sucsess I have now given up. With DILD, if you follow the correct instructions your dild's will become more frequent. With WILDs, yo could try 30 different methods but none of them might work for you. This is my opinion though, mainly from personal experience.

In a nutshell, the WILD method is falling asleep without losing consciousness. There are many techniques out there and many different forms of WILD (DEILD, FILD, etc). Basically, if you fall asleep without losing consciousness.awareness during the process...you performed a WILD (wake induced lucid dream).

With a DILD, is simply realizing you are dreaming while you are within the dream. Keeping a dream journal, performing RCs, etc...all of this is to help spark your mind to realize you are dreaming while you are in the dream. If you are within a dream and realize, "Hey I'm dreaming right now!" Then this is a DILD (dream induced lucid dream).

Another form that is a bit different than these is the EILD (externally induced lucid dream). Basically, an external device/sound/etc breaks through from waking life and into your dream state. Hearing the sound in your dream helps you realize you are dreaming. Technically, you are becoming lucid within the dream, but an outside source is providing aide toward your lucidity.

Just about every other method I can think of falls under DILD or WILD though.

I think everyone needs to work out what technique is the best techniques to them. I use WILD because I found out through trial and error that DILD wasn't the technique for me and went on to great success with wild. Actually i think yoshi's- guide to wild was one of the first tutorials I read on the subject of Wake induced lucid dreams.
