      *hypnagogic, not hypnotic.

The way to increase the duration and intensity of the experience is to simply continue to relax. Your relaxation is what drives it forward. Eventually, the imagery will start to appear highly 3-dimensional. As well, your body will either be paralyzed or close to it. At this point, you can enter the dream by simply walking forward. Since your body is paralyzed, that walk signal will cause your "dream body" to move, at which point the dream will wrap around you. This process can fail at any point, mind you.

Also, don't bother WILDing at the beginning of the night. Physiologically, it's a losing battle. Some people say "anything is possible", but you really can't alter your circadian rhythm.

You can WILD without having hypnagogic images. When I want to WILD, I wake up after about six hours of sleep and leave my bed for less than five minutes. I have found out that if I try to WILD immediately after waking up (with an alarm) I just get too frustrated and uncomfortable. When I return to bed, I relax while I listen to sounds from outside my window. Within 15 minutes I get a tingling sensation all over my body, which is sleep paralysis. The transition into a lucid dream doesn’t take more than 5-10 seconds. When the tingling stops, I’m in a lucid dream where I just have to walk out of my bed and do whatever I want!

There’s another technique that you may be interested in, and it’s called VILD (Visually Incubated Lucid Dream). In this method, you imagine that you’re in a dream. Your visualization will eventually transform into a real dream.

Flickering eyelids don’t mean that you were in REM. Also, your foot shouldn’t be moving if you’re in SP. Those kinds of twitches happen in earlier stages of sleep. Are you sure you were in SP, and not just numb for lying still for a long time? SP is usually very noticeable. When you reach it, it won’t be long until you end up in the dream state!
