weird digital static sound heard just before sleep...

      Hey Guys,

First of all, after taking a quick look through this site, i am VERY excited about some of the things i have been reading, after reading a few of the RC techniques the very next night i was able to lucid dream for a few seconds for the first time in ages!!! years ago i had been able to lucid dream for a short time but had forgotten about it recently.

Theres something about the dream world to me that seems to be intrinsically linked to waking life and i feel very strongly about it.

i cant wait to put some of these techniques to use and begin lucid dreaming on a regular basis!!! Still cant believe this site even exists!

ok, geting to the point. sometimes when i go to bed, just before i go to sleep i hear a loud sound like an electronic digital static, which begins and ends very abruptly, it sounds like this noise is coming from inside my head. Im quite sure its just an artifact of drifting to the dream world but i find it quite strange and friends that i have mentioned it to have NOT experienced anything similar...

has anyone here heard of anything like this?

Am i the only one to experience this?

      adv-THANKS-ance

I get this on occasion too, actually, and sometimes it's really loud. Sometimes it sounds like someone is talking on a CB radio or something with really bad reception.

As far as I'm aware, its simply another auditory hallucination. Do your friends LD? Do you hear it every time?

Also, welcome to the boards! Hope you find all that you're looking for here.

      Hi LSpeed,

Javan is right, what you're experiencing is called hypnopompia (which is the audible version of hypnogoggia.) Hypnogoggia are basically hallucinations- sensations being fired off in your head, usually random. They can be so "real" sometimes that your mind will incorporate them into a situation or scenario in your head to create an experience.

For example, I've heard that same electronic crackling during sleep paralysis. This happened way before I knew anything about SP or lucid dreaming. Since I couldn't move AND could hear this sound, I seriously thought that the sound was coming from my guitar amp and that it was somehow electricuting me!

Experiencing hypnogoggia is actually a good thing - it lets you know you're just about to enter a dream. You're essentially standing on the threshold of wakefulness and dream.

if you stop thinking, and focus of you breathing at this point, you may be able to turn that into a WILD. If anything, it shows a natural ability towards LDing. That is a good advantage to have. Good night and Good luck!

I get this from time to time, and I finally realized what it actually is (or at least, what it actually is at least some of the time...)

The answer is disappointingly mundane: just before falling completely asleep, you'll often take a sharp breath where your tongue grinds against the back of your throat. It makes kind of a flatulent noise; this echoes around your head and sounds for all the world like a low-pitched electronic buzz or old-school video game sound effect. I caught myself doing it a few times when I was awake enough to feel my tongue and throat making the noise.

Then again, I have heard some other noises when on the brink of sleep that are VERY weird and are definitely hypnapompic.

I hear that sound when A) I am about to fall asleep or B) When I am experiencing Sleep Parylisi. The later of the two being something I despise unless its an enjoyable SP.

Hi - I have another view on the sound you hear. As you can see from all the posts it's not at all unusual, and I belong a group which is actually called the religion of the light and sound. People often describe the sound in different ways - buzzing, electric hum etc. According to everyone I know that hears it the sound seems to be inside your head, and the sounds can change (eg to a single rising note, a buzzing, or like a heavy wind). The theory part is that as life (or spirit, or the animating principle of the universe - whatever you believe) moves through the different planes, it vibrates the atoms differently according to the quality of the matter on the plane. I can't substantiate the theory but I can tell you that it's a well-recognised thing, and it tends to happen in meditation or other journeys in consciousness (like dreaming). So for anyone wanting to LD it's a good sign. Some people feel it only as a vibration.

I'm also a newbie and also excited about the website. Unfortunately since becoming a member I've lost my dreams altogether - weird. But I'll keep working at it.

The site is www.eckankar.org I'm pretty sure the site won't tell you much about the theory side of things though.

What I like about it is that it doesn't diss any belief.
