My Red Balloon, A Villanelle
A place neither here nor there;
an unfamiliar place for my red balloon.
And while I sleep, I am aware.
And to all the dangers of a world elsewhere
I suddenly find I am immune
in a place neither here nor there.
I wonder through my world of answered prayers
where lost cats are found and stray seeds bloom.
I’m fast asleep, but I’m aware.
I speak with a man most evasive, now bare,
and grasp this moment most opportune.
This is my place, not here or there.
My red balloon, it takes the air.
Farewell, I will see you again soon
while I sleep, I’ll be aware
The fabrics of this world begin to tear
and the veil is lifted to my room.
In my place neither here nor there
I was asleep; I was aware.
