      moSh's Music Thread

I've noticed that me making a new thread each time I finish a piece of music relevant to this forum might be a little much, especially considering the relative emptiness of this subforum.

So, instead, I thought I'd just compile it all here, and add to this thread as I go.

Feel free to let me know what you think, and please post if you had any suggestions - I'm always looking for ideas (either musical or contextual).

First off, here's the piece I just finished for my aunt's funeral. Instead of being a self-indulgent piece about my personal feelings about losing a family member, I wanted to write something that referred to the Buddhism concept of objective detachment from emotions, which I then talked about briefly in the ceremony.

      Release

And here's my 'back catalogue' as it were:

This is my chillstep/minimal EP, finished not long ago, that is loosely based around aspects of spirituality:

      Isolation Sickness EP
If you only have time for 1 track, I'd suggest Isolation Sickness.

My liquid drum & bass album, based entirely on things encountered in dreams:

      Shades of Alternate Planes
Check the individual pages for each track if you want to know their meanings.

Some older, miscellaneous trip-hop tracks that you might enjoy:

      Gateway

Venetian Snares - Senki Dala (Hypocr.te Remix)

      Decide To Decide

      Enjoy!

I really like the shades of alternate planes drum'n'bass album, nice to relax to haven't listened to your other stuff but this is some serious business, not that I have ever looked into specifically making drum and bass, I'm into making other music but seriously cool to listen to on a summers day.

Thanks! Yeah I love liquid D&B in the sun.

What kind of music do you make? I'd love to hear some if it's available?

I'm aiming for developing mainly game suited music (to go along with my game devlopment course in college), so anywhere from industrial, orchestral, 8-bit etc, in other words I don't really have a style.
If I find some of my tracks I developed before easter I might upload them, haven't made anything new lately :/

Oh that sounds cool! I'd love to be a composer of games or film.

      What program(s) do you use?

I started off with fruity loops like most people but luckily my cousin is a dj who knows loads of other's in the businnes so I now have a copy of cubase 5 and a few plugins and a large sound sample base (although I never use them). I have a shure mic, a sh201 synthesizer, zoom pedal, yamaha guitar, ocarina which I all record to fit my tracks. Mainly I still use the built in synths and piano's in cubase but thats around it. I've tried logic and sonar but I didn't really like them. Which do you use?

What do you think of Cubase? I've had it for a little while but I'm yet to become totally comfortable using it. The features overall seem comparable to logic studio (the only other audio software I've used extensively, which I love), but operating it has been much less fluid. The resources including instruments and effects that come with logic also seem much better to me. I like Cubase's sample editor with the midi-like interface for pitch-bending and time-warping notes, which is IMO much easier to use than logic's. It may be because I'm more experienced with it (logic 9 was the software we used for the studio recording class I took my last year of high school), but I'd much rather use logic.

I've been using Reason 5 and Cubase 6 so far. Reason for sound design and its easy to use sequencer, and Cubase for any audio-handling (such as chopping up samples and final mastering). This has served me well so far, but I'm trying to teach myself to use Ableton Live, as it's far more powerful than Reason, but it's frustrating starting a new program.

For the things I use it for, I really like Cubase, but I've never even tried using VSTs, MIDI or anything else other than arranging and modifying sampled material/my exported Reason files. Logic is suppose to be one of, if not the best programs for music production, so I'd stick with that.

I've used ableton live lite 8 a bit, and I have to say I was not impressed. The whole idea behind the way the arrangement view works is neat, but I feel like overall it's too limited to be the best option for anything other than certain sorts of live performance. It is ultimately capable of a lot of the things that software like Cubase and Logic do, but ultimately it's more like DJ software than a full on music program.

It's fine for arranging clips and whatnot, but in my opinion software instruments and effects are much easier to manage in Logic, and the ones that come packaged with it are of better quality.

I've never tried pro tools, but I understand that it and logic have been becoming gradually more similar over time, as each company made its answers to features the other implemented.

The main reason I moved (or am trying to move) is that there is so much more you can do sound design-wise in Live compared to Reason - though I assume no more so than Logic or Pro Tools. Seeing as sound design is the biggest part of making electronic music, I thought I'd get a more professional sound from switching programs. I'm not a fan of the sequencer/arranger either, and I'm hoping it's just a case of 'getting used to it'.

Yeah I've never seen Cubase as much of a synth/sound design program, which is why I only use it for pre-existing audio files, and for that I find it very straightforward.

I love the simplicity of cubase once you get to know it but your right logic is much more fluid and contains better vst's. I have vst's for reverb/delay etc etc and a few vst's with high quality orchestral and pure electronic noises which I've picked up over the years.
I've never really had a good shot with logic so my experience with it is pretty low. Anyways the only reason I even currently own cubase 5 is because my cousin liked logic 9 more, I guess I get second best.

As for ableton, I had a great time messing around with it, with my friends mpk61 akai midi keyboard (that thing is a beast btw). Its great for live improvisation but once I tried composing an actual piece I would have been more succesfull just recording my toaster.
As for latency and what not cubase is perfect, I can record all my midi instruments as well as my mic and multiple vst's, chop up everything, time warp some things to get them in beat. I like the feel of it. Although I wouldn't mind if it looked a bit better, but I've never really bothered customizing it.

Wow, I love all the tracks on your Isolation Sickness EP. Think maybe you could hook me up with a dl link. I wanna it on my "kickass" playlist. You got a lot of potential, and I think that you music ranks up there with Nuage, Hybrid Minds, and MitiS. What program do you use?

If you're not afraid to torrent, you can get almost any program from the internet for free. I know it's illegal and immoral and whatnot, but I feel I've bought my share of programs and they make them so goddamn pricey it's insane! I'm a student, I need free things

Thanks a lot man! Your 'kickass' playlist? High praise indeed.

They were all available for free download not long ago, but I'm afraid you missed it! However, I'm going to put it all on BandCamp soon (potentially tonight), and it'll be a 'pay-what-you-want' type deal (which includes downloading it free).

I wouldn't say I'm as professional sounding as those artists, but it means a lot to be compared to them! I've been using a combination of Reason 5 and Cubase 6, but I'm trying to teach myself to use Ableton Live to eventually get better at complex sound-design.

      Thanks for listening!

Hahaha XD I'd know all about it, I know a guy who's a dj who goes to play at ibiza quite often and he stills own cracked copies of most his software. I just want to stick to cubase because I can go online with it while I compose music, and why let such a piece of software go to waste.
I agree with xcuz though you got some serious potential, would like to download the shades of alternate planes album, btw i'll upload Ii track in the next few days containing some rough ideas I've had lately.

Yeah, I got a playlist titled "Kickass" on my Songbird... Also, you can achieve a nice complex sound design with Reason and Cubase, it's just how you use your plugins and samples. I used to do a little House with Ableton and Fruity Loops a while back, but all that shit's lost.

It looks LQ when uploaded on DV...

I'm uploading both albums to Bandcamp as we speak, but apparently I need to wait a day or 2 until my PayPal account gets properly set up. Shades of Alternate Planes will be £3, or 60p a track, but if anyone has real issues with paying that much, I'll consider sending it for free.

I'll put the links on this thread as soon as they're ready.

I only do my sound design in Reason at the moment, and I just feel like I've exhausted its possibilities to an extent. Live just looks a tad more diverse.

Oh, I've never used Reason, so I can't compare.

As for my own stuff, there were a few things that never really made it to a finished state, but I'm back to working recently and I have a few things in the works. Mostly some rock/alternative oriented stuff with a sort of punk/DIY aesthetic (partly by necessity ), though it only really exists in my head currently, but I'm gonna try to get some demos together (I just got a drumset and enough mics to record it) and see where I can go with it. One of my friends is also very into music and recording and I might get him to help some with the production side of things. He just recorded an album with another friend under the name New Generation and released it as a free download; a light rock feel with a hip-hop spin, almost reminds me of Sublime minus the reggae.

My main instrument is guitar, but I can manage with a bass, I fool around with the piano sometimes, and I'm going to start learning some drumming on top of what I already know from fooling around - with what I'm able to play given the fact that I rarely ever got to play on a real drumkit, I feel like I have a bit of a knack for it, so we'll see how far that goes.

For some reason I always thought you played guitar. How long have you been drumming?

I'm sure after playing all those instruments, drumming will be no problem. To be honest, it's the best instrument to learn in that no matter how good you are, it's always insanely fun.

I've tried on multiple occasions to pick up the guitar, but I've never gotten further than a few chords unfortunately. I've been drumming for almost 13 years now, but I'm not as good I should be to be honest.

A bit. Being a drummer I've never had to be concerned with staff notation (apart from percussion notation which is totally different), which is why making electronic music is so much better for me. I did do my grade 5 theory a few years ago to help with my GCSE music, and I've done A level music and am now studying music at uni, so I know a few things about general theory, but I'm no master. Why do you ask?

I just asked because I see some lucky people that can just produce music by messing around in a daw without absolutely any knowledge of music, I was just curious as to if you were developing music by feeling only.

Oh I see, everything I do is by ear, yes. I don't create a chord sequence based on what chord should theoretically follow the previous one, I'll just mess around on my keyboard, and move the MIDI around until I think it sounds best. I know a thing or two about cadences, as well as major and minor chords, but I don't really tend to utilise this knowledge.

That's why I'd suck at notating music, I'm constantly changing minute details, and sometimes I'll just scrap half the track altogether.

A little update for you all.

I just finished mastering a jazzy, Bonobo-esque mix of my most recent track, Release. Very approachable kind of music, though not a style I'm used to producing.

Give it a listen and let me know what you think (and don't forget to listen to the original if you haven't already).

      Release (Kickback Mix)

      Enjoy!

Just remembered this post, just in case you're still interested, all my music's available to download HERE, some for free, some for a minimal fee.

Also, just as a little update, my recent track Release is currently being remixed by a few people on my course, so eyes peeled for that!
