      Artistic Coöperation I: Music

I've had this idea before, for making a Lucid Dream WILD-induction/guidance MP3 together with others on this forum.

So what if we can work together via here in making Music with joint efforts?

Some of us may be skilled and tallented to sing, play guitar, piano, drums, didgeridoo, harp, violin..etc while others may not but instead they may have Music recording/editing and sampling/composing programs which others don't have.

Maybe some coöperation here would be great.
      Here's the Idea:
Musician 1 who plays and records drums or makes beats with software could make a nice beat and send it to Musician 2 in MP3 format or another easily compatible format for musician 2 to work with.

Musician 2 plays a nice Bassline on the beats and records it on top of it. Sends the resulting file ( or both files, Drumrecordingtrack and Guitarrecordingtrack, seperately for less quality-loss ) to musician 3.

Musician 3 plays a nice guitar party over the beat and records it ontop of it and sends the resulting file to Musician 4 who plays a niceAccordion tune over it...etc
And so on and so on..
      Get the Idea?

So to start this we need the basis of every song: A rythm.
Anyone who has something like Reason or another program to make a good beat? Preferably make a rythm you made up yourself, but if you have no idea where to start with a beat here are some suggestions handy for me to continue with.

Beats of Music Styles I know to play well:
      SKA/Rocksteady
      Reggae/Dub
Middle eastern music (Turkish, Israëli, Egyptian, Persian..etc)
      Spanish Flamenco
      Bossanova
      Gipsy music
      Funky music
      Classical music

I myself own a lousy, but working recording/editing program called audacity.
      I play:
      -guitar(accoustic and semi-accoustic)
      -Piano(Synthesizer)
      -Percussion(Darbuka & Djembé) and
      -Bassguitar(Electric Bass from my dad).
With the synthesizer I can play anything from Turkish Nai flute to Indian Percussion, from Violin to Kanoon so we should be able to make some really nice music together.

Now someone make a beat and start this musical coöperation.

Fun idea... I've done this sort of thing before with my brother.

I'll join if you can set up a workflow everyone can use. I have Sonar and can use .wav, .aiff, .ogg, .mp3... whatever anyone likes. I can also export individual tracks at any bit-depth and sampling rate.

In fact, I might be willing to mix and master the final song, if we can keep the tracks separate. I've done a lot of audio work over the years, so I'm fairly adept.

I'm definitely in. I play electric guitar, make beats with Fruity Loops and two KORG synthesizers, and can edit in and mix sound samples.

If you need a bassist, I'm your man. Well, maybe. Depends on what style you're after. I compose works with melodic qualities, so if you need just generic basslines for dance-type music, then I'm probably not your man. (I need also mention the slap n' pop technique is beyond my capabilities, since my bass isn't built for it. I need to get me a Fender Jazz Bass...)

I've also got a program that can edit soundfiles; pitch, speed and volume changes and all that. And more, probably. Not that I'm an expert at using it, but....

I can also read and write sheet music to some degree, in case that need should ever pop up somewhere.

Anyway, this could be fun. Just gimme a holler.

EDIT: Oh, and I've also made a few generic hard-rock drumlines on my midi program that I'd be willing to share. I dunno whether the files will work for anyone's music players (they don't for mine), so I generally record them as .wav files.

If quality is an issue, someone will need to be in charge of original .wav files (or whatever format you're using) in a good sequencer. The tracks should be kept separate so that a final mix can be made.

If you need someone for that role, I'll volunteer. I use Sonar 7PE, which is a professional studio sequencer. I'm very well-versed in its use, having used Sonar (and previously "Cakewalk") for many years.

Here is my solo rock album Red Wire from 2003:

I also tracked, mixed, and produced for Ted Hovis and Ted Hovis Band, which you can listen to here:
http://www.tedhovis.com/music/ I also did the keyboard playing, string and horn arrangements, some drum programming, and background vocals on all the tunes except for those from Change in Progress.

I now have Reason4. I can make beats.

Lëzen. I have recorder a bassline, but my recording quality sucks and I only have a semi accoustic guitar. I was wondering if I let you hear the bassline, could you learn to play it by listening to it? If so would you want to Record that bassline for me, played on your Bass guitar? If possible in the exact same tempo.

If you could do that then I can replace my crappy soundquality bassline with your good soundquality bassline and it would be the finnishing touch to a song I've been working on today.
This is the bassline. Allthough I'm having trouble playing or downloading the file, perhaps you can?

      http://boomp3.com/listen/byz28q49l_l/bassline-bpm

Hope you can play and record that for me.

I'm sure I can play it, by ear, and I will since you asked nice. However, I just wanna make it clear that I'm gonna be asserting my own artistic independence insofar as this Artistic Coöperation goes. I'm just saying I don't want to be the guy everyone tells "Here, I made a bassline for you, since we all know bassists are barely even musicians and are therefore incapable of composing their own melodies." That may be true for most bassists, but I'm not one of them. I'm a melodic man, I can assure you.

Anyway, I'll try to have it done tonight. It might not be as good a quality as your file, though, since whenever I record .wav files, there's always that inane buzzing in the back.

EDIT: Here it is. Two things to know about it are a) the sound quality is indeed crappy and b) the fingering was very wonky (spans across the first four frets, which is quite a distance on a bass guitar) so it might be a little crappily played. [On a side note, I noticed it's written in my favorite key - D# minor. Good taste. ]

Amen. I am also a melodic man. What you and I have that so many "Musicians" lack is Inspiration. A vivid imagination from which we compose our own musical ideas.

I just was so frustrated with my bootleg that the bass wasn't really Bassy enough and therefor I asked some help. Thanks alot. Boomp3's server seems to be down so I'll have to hear it later.

BTW did you make it downloadable? After uploading a file and before clicking "Save" you can check the option "Allow download". Please do so I can download the wav file.
      Thanks a bunch anyways.

Soon, maybe the comming week, I will be going into a studio where there's guitars, bassguitars, organs, a synthesizer, a REALLy good vocal Mic and kickass sound and recording equipment. Untill that time I'll be working on a bootleg/jam-song I've made (for which this bassline is). I will soon post it in here:
http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...t=47980&page=2 That is when Boomp3's server is working as it should again.

When I've recorded my song in the Studio i'll surely share the results here.

Maybe we could do a Lucid guidance/induction MP3 together right?

Just want a sort of Spontanious collaboration where everyone just adds their bit to the track and moves it on to the next person to add their thing. I can start off by making a Beat in Reason and putting a link here from which it can be downloaded so it can be worked on by the next person.

I've got 3 beats I've made in Reason allready. 2 Ska beats and 1 Dub/Reggae beat.
Let me know if you prefer to work with wav. files or mp3 files and perhaps a prefered style and I'll provide the backbone and start: The Beat.

Sounds good to me, however, in my personal experience, nothing in our band ever gets done when we try to start with a drumbeat and layer the other parts on top of it. We usually make the most progress starting off with either a guitar riff or a bass riff (usually guitar) first, and then having everyone else come up with something to compliment it. But that's just in my experience.

Also, about drumbeats, my personal preference is a hard rock type beat. Hard rock and thrash metal (which, seeing as how you're into ska and reggae, I realize that might not be the style you're after...)

Sorry I'm late. I have Reason 4 and ProTools and some of my song files can get pretty huge. Tell me what you think, some of my music is in the link below:

I'm not sure if you're interested in having another guitarist? I mainly play fusion jazz kind of stuff because it's more accessible as an ensemble than progressive music. Though as a listener a lot of what i listen to is progressive- lately a lot of post-rock. I do some slide stuff through a couple of effects boxes and it outputs a real dreamy soundscape. If you've listened to stuff like midoriyami, mogwai, Dsco etc. it has that kind of sound to it. I used to be quite decent at didgeridoo as well, though I haven't played it in several years- I'll take it out from storage and have a blow into it when i get the chance.

I'm doing composition elective for my final year of high school, we choose our own focus area- in this case I'm looking at the relationship between surrealism and music. We compose using midi based programs, but perhaps some of the ideas can be integrated into this project.

      Peace.
