Well, it's been several years now since I've been at it. Though doing great things in Photoshop requires not just knowledge of the software but creativity, imagination.
Though as far as the software, it pays to be curious. Tutorials might be good for a start but in the end the one way to gain most experience and learn what it is you need from Photoshop is to use it yourself, poke around, use the different functions it provides.
And, all in all, it's a good idea to work on a need-to-need basis. That is, if you, say, need fiery text on a banner. Say you've learned how to do some fading effects already and made the banner background but need fiery text. So you go and find a tutorial for a fiery text effect online. In following it, you won't just learn one more effect to add to your collection but you might very well learn about different Photoshop functions you hadn't known before.
