The treatment of animals is becoming way better because more people are speaking out about it. I think if everyone suddenly stopped eating animal products, they would just take all the cows, shoot them, and throw them into a ditch somewhere. Is that really any better?
Just be aware that you must eat properly if you are vegan. Take your multivitamins, consult with a specialist...
And for the love of god, don't get testy around other people who don't share your views. Otherwise, people will stop attempting to understand you.
Edit: Haha no I'm not a vegan. Have you seen that documentary Supersize Me? The dude's girlfriend was a vegan, and she came up with the most awesome dishes.
Don't intend on pushing my views on others...I will openly explain them if asked...but other than that...there is no need to bring it up really.

The confinement issue is interesting, but realistically the chickens in my garden have it better off than chickens in the wild (wherever they may be). They get a stable environment without predators, reasonable amount of free movement (chickens don't need endless acres of land, they wouldn't ever use most of it, they only go so far from their nesting area - in this case a hen-house), reliable source of food.
Animals don't need to be free. As you've said yourself, they aren't sentient, there isn't the desire for endless rolling grasslands. They want a stable, risk-free environment, which we can provide.
So if you have the time and effort, get your own chickens, cows, and use their eggs, milk, provided you give them that safe environment and don't mistreat them.
I wish I had the time and space hehe. I dunno...it just feels wrong eating something that used to live...and it was born with the specific purpose of being killed and ate by human beings...I mean...I dunno...it just doesn't seem necessary to me. It would be nice if they could provide shelter for cows/chickens and get milk/eggs from them until they die...but there is negative profit in doing that so I would not try to get anyone to do that.

But we used to use horses...now they aren't necessary...we have cars. Just because it was necessary in the past does not mean it is necessary now. I wouldn't be apposed to it at all if it was necessary. But I do realize that a vast amount of people prefer animals to veggies and fruits etc...I have no beef to pick with them, haha I accidentally made a pun
