Thread: How do you organize your computer?

I start with the Windows folder, and organize all the files by types. In fact, I do this with everything in Program Files too.

First of all, move (not copy) ALL of your desktop icons into a folder NOT on your desktop. Then put back ONLY the ones you use every day, most often. Then download RocketDock and copy the rest of the shortcuts that you actually use onto it. Position the dock at the top of your screen, adjusted to a size that will fit all of your icons. Set it to auto-hide.

Now that your desktop is gloriously uncluttered (assuming, of course, that it was cluttered in the first place) head to your documents folder. Make several new folders, naming them something like, "Saved Web Pages," "Short Stories," "e-Books", "PDFs," etc., just come up with reasonable categories. Then go through your documents and move files to the corresponding folders as you find them. Do the same to your pictures folder; make new folders within your pictures folder, and move pictures into the folder it fits. For instance, my Pictures folder has "Camera Pictures," for pics straight out of my camera, "Drawings," "Knife Designs," "Pictures of Me," "Random Pictures," and a few others.

Then you're going to want to make sure that newly acquired files don't mess this nice structure up, so set up a specific Downloads folder, and direct your download manager or Firefox to download to that folder from now on. You can then move files to their appropriate locations at your leisure without undue clutter. If you really want to increase productivity, organize your bookmarks too. Go about it the same way, using Firefox's 'Organize Bookmarks'. Make new folders within your bookmark menu, and name them strategically. I've got 18 submenus rather than having a hugely long scrolling monstrosity that prevents me from finding what I want. With my bookmarks categorized, it saves me hours a week searching out particular bookmarks.

You go into my computer, go to C drive, and make TWO folders.

ONE: PORN

TWO: EVERYTHING ELSE

Now you can make sub folders within those, but that's the main thing.

I do the same thing, except my pr0n is on my desktop directly.

I'm actually pretty boring... I've been using the pre-defined directories as prescribed (Videos for videos, etc.) I have a txt directory for various documents (includes pdf but what the hell). I have a src directory, in which I keep software projects I'm working on (which sit in CVS on another host). Before I move stuff into these, I often have them on my desktop just cause I use them all the time (e.g. condo tax related documents that need archiving, etc.)

Jeez, cuddlyperson, everytime I see you post it is ALWAYS about porn.

Anyway, I was thinking Pictures is pretty simple:


Photos (Camera pictures)

Pictures (Saved pictures)

Wallpaper (Saved wallpapers)

Temp (Ones that are downloaded temporarily for documents, etc.)


As for Music, I have that base covered.



Documents I have a real problem with.

oh i know the God ones, but the porn is an eye opener... Guess i should stop doing that..

Anyway unless the computer is yours alone then making such folders is a bad idea, ya probably don;t want family members to see it, leave it on the interwebz.

I just use folders like My Stuff>art or My Stuff> Dream journal. I have a Mac which is already pretty organized already.

Let iTunes organize your music, you aren't going to do better than it.

Put your porn in invisible folders

Seperate your documents from School, Work, Light Reading, and Others. Just keep going like that.

This is my computer. Music I have organized to the complete pinnacle of organization. (iTunes)

Also, I keep all my old files in hidden folders. (Not porn)

Just sharing with you: I keep my downloads folder organized in blocks. Every two dozen downloads or so, I simply put it in a folder named "Block 1" then the next two dozen go into "Block 2"

I guess I should date them really...

Hey, now that Block idea is a good one! I might have to start doing that, only dated.

I don't. Anyway, try putting things in grouped folders.

I organize all my folders by...well...i haven't really, i just download everything, it gets put on my desktop, and thats it. I only start moving things when im down to my last icon space.

I save some things according to document type, and some things according to what it is. Eg. I'll have a folder for Microsoft Word.

However My Pictures is utterly different. I won't go into details but it involves folders within folders within folders.

I dont organaize my computer i just keep it as is.
