Tell me about animation with Blender

I'm really curious about learning some neat 3d animation using Blender. Has anyone played with it before? What kind of learning curve can I expect? How much "artistry" needs to go into it? That is, let's say I want to animate someone falling... do I have to handle every frame myself, or is there some ragdoll physics help at my disposal, etc.?

I'll probably just install it and start going through the free wikibook that's available and messing around with it.

you don't have to handle every frame. you just set the person or whatever it is in a position and then get the thing into another position and select some frames futher away (not really sure about how to do this). the motion between will be done by it self.
Elephantsdream and the 3D in pushing the limits is made in blender.

      Oh god, Blender *shutters*

I found it very difficult to work with, it's got a really strange user interface and nothing is where you'd expect it to be. I'm sure that once you get used to it it should be all that hard though.

I'm an avid user of Vim, so I'm sure I'll get over the modal interface of Blender. I have heard that people who are used to using different software (e.g. 3d studio max or SoftImage) have a harder time adapting, but I'm a clean slate, so I'm sure that part will be fine.

I want to work my way up to making a simple fight scene type deal. I don't have delusions of making Haloid or anything like that, but something simple to work towards.

Would I benefit from starting with something like Poser? Hopefully, there is some kind of ragdoll physics support so I can do things like shoulder throws and stuff in a more realistic way
