Tell me about braces

I got my spacers yesterday, they hirt like a bitch and I can barely eat. Can't wait to hear about braces...

The 4 years I had braces were the worst of my life.

I flat out refused to wear a retainer for another year.

My teeth are fine.

4 Years? That sucks. I have them for 2. I'm sure I'll get used to them. I get them on the 26, 4 more days with spacers...

Ok i have braces, they where fitted in april.
The spacers are the worst of all, i had 8 of them and i can say the honest truth that they hurt waaaay more than braces do.
When you first get your braces put in they feel tight for 2 hours without pain, when you wake up in the morning the next day they do hurt, but not as bad as the spacers, and depending how bad your teeth are.
I got through the pain without pain killers so it is torelable, your teeth and gums will hurt for 2-4 days and it will hurt like crap to bite hard things.

After 5 days the pain is completely gone but it still hurts a little to bite hard things, 7 days after you cannot feel a thing at all, i can't feel the braces in my mouth at all, it's like there not even there...

When they get tightened they take the old wire out and put in a new thicker wire, it will hurt for 3 days then it will go away.

Every tightening you have it will hurt less, last week i had them tightened and they didn't hurt at all.

I saw my teeth straighter after two weeks, i was pleasently shocked

Back to the spacers though i took 5 out because the pain was so bad, i suggest don't do it because then you will have to wear them again like i had to, but you could say they just slipped out, thats what i did and the ortho said it always happens and they don't know why they still use them.

Keep your gums healthyy and it will lessen the pain, mouth wash etc.

Thanks. Now I'm using Chloroseptic to numb my mouth, but the spacers are still murder. I don't think the lady did them right. When she took the first one out of the package, she grabbed it with her little tool and it went flying through the room. She said, "Whoops! I missed that one!" I was scared as hell.

I've got braces and boy howdy are they fun!

i haven't learned to keep the food out of them yet

just, whatever you do, don't let them convince you or anyone else to remove a tooth to create space for your other teeth.

Your mouth is gonna feel realllly cramped the first day or two until it adjusts. Besides not being able to eat certain foods for about 2 years, they never really bothered me that much. Rubber bands on the other hand, were a whole different story. Those things can drive you mad. I also had to wear a headgear at night for about a year, that wasn't too fine and dandy either. If you don't have either of those, you'll probably be fine. Just do what the orthodontist tells you so you can get them off ASAP.

I had my bracers on for a year. I had four teeth pulled out to begin with because of overcrowding.

They put a new thicker wire in every month when I had my checkup. I couldn't eat anything hard, I was only able to eat soup, Farex (baby cereal! haha) and that was about it. As you can imagine my weight dropped heaps.

It's the best feeling when they come off though. Your teeth feel so smooth, it's weird!

I'm getting my braces off in 1 year. When you get them on, they hurt for a week or two, meaning that you can't eat practically anything. Then they stop hurting for a while, just to have them be made tighter and start hurting all over again. Plus, I have to carry a toothpick around with me, because food is always getting stuck. For some reason, I can eat pretty much anything without causing damage to my braces. Nothing has ever gone wrong with them.

As far as rubber bands go, they are pretty cruel. First off, they hurt for a few days. Secondly, they look weird. And thirdly, you have to wear them 24/7 and take them off when you eat. So you might as well carry a pack of them with you.

I have an appointment on the 4th September to view a digital representation of what my mouth will look lik after my adjustments, then a couple of weeks later have mine.

I'm going for Invisalign though, not wire braces, means I can eat what I want and they're not as visable as braces. Still expect it to hurt though for the first couple of days.

Buy a waterpik, I had one while I had braces, blasts the food right out of there.
I only had mine for a year and a half and I'm very happy to have had it done.

Getting braces is almost as bad as getting a DUI. At least it was for me. before they did anything, they had to remove 4 adult teeth to make room for some other teeth that hadn't came in. While they were at it, they thought it'd be a good time to also remove all 4 of my wisdom teeth. The only plus side to getting 8 teeth removed at once is I was given some hard core pain meds afterwards. And I got laughing gassed before being put under before they butchered my mouth.

Then came the spacers (not pleasant) followed by the braces themselves. I was accustomed to eating pretty much everything that sucks to eat with braces [whole apples, chewy foods, really crunchy foods etc.] and had food stuck in them after every meal. I had them on from 8th grade until half way through senior year. After a while, I got used to cutting my tongue all the time on the metal, and the twice a month dentist visits from hell.

Having them finally removed is like a mouth orgasm. My teeth felt so smooth and awesome. But I was told I had to wear a retainer for a few years. They then glued a metal wire to the bottom of my teeth that I was told would be there for the rest of my life, but after complaining about it for a year, and having a tough time cleaning around it, they took it off and made me a bottom retainer.

Now, almost 3 years after having them off, I still have to wear my retainers (not very often luckily, about twice a week or so), and my teeth are always semi-loose. I can every so slightly wiggle all of them. I can't bit the tops off of beer bottles. And I still can't eat anything similar to rock candy.

So basically I traded in 4 years of having an easy life, and tooth strength for a nice looking smile. It kind of balances out. Sometimes I regret it though, but then again, my teeth were really messed up.

In summary, hospitals have the best drugs

lol I love yor summary. I think they said I'd get them tightened once every 6 weeks, not bad. But I think I am gonna lose aot of weight with these. No candy :/

i would always sleep weird and then the braces would cut the insides of my lips. but ask them for the rubber things that go over them so it doesnt hurt your lips and such. wax does the same thing but i liked the rubber ones better.

also. put a large battery to your braces. (larger than 9 volt) amazing feeling =D. seriously. when i did it i started to see alll blue and nothing else. it was great

I'd give it a shot. Just don't go too much better than a 9 volt and you'll be fine, you can stick those on your tongue and barely feel it. I wish I thought of trying that when I had braces.

Didn't wear the retainer either. Well i did for a monht or two, then gave up and never went back. Must be about 2 years later now and my teeth look fine.

Braces are never worth it, thousands of dollars and two years of pain for straight teeth and vanity.

Umm. it seems you don't fully know about them. If I don't get them, then my lower jaw will grow two inches out and I will need massive surgery, plus my two front teeth will chip and then break. I say it is worth a few thousand bucks for that.
