      Tell me about freerunning!

      Freerunning is pretty awesome.

But tell me, how does one exercise for free running?
How do I get over a fear of heights, without actually going up high?
How would I build hand strength? I always find my hands to start hurting after I hold onto a bar for too long or something...could certain types of gloves fix this?
And can anyone here freerun, or have you tried it?

I do some parkour. My friends and I have made a few vids... It's of the same brand.

Anyway, it's really good to train in gymnastic arenas and padded areas. That's how you can attempt something without fear and know your real limits.
Who cares if your up high, then?

As far as training goes run alot, excercise your calves, practice rolls, do some balanced weight programs and stuff.

      Can you link those vids?

Where would I even find padded areas and stuff?

And how would I practice roles?

Start with rolls at ground level.

Then get up about 5 feet above grassy grounds, get a little running start, jump off and roll.

      Then go to ten feet.

Eventually fifteen, maybe. That's the most I'll ever jump from.

Padded areas are like gymnastics gymnasiums, Kidz Plex's, stuff like that.

My friend has the vids. I'll see where he ahs them. Most of them have me hurting myself pretty badly...

I can link you to some good parkour training vids.

I trained parkour with some guys half a year ago or something, but kinda stopped since my body wasn't really ready for that. I couldn't even do pull-ups. I'm stronger now and I started jogging to work, so I'm hoping I can get into a better condition and then perhaps start doing parkour again. I love jumping and climbing around

As far training, do pull-ups, push-ups, run around, jump around and practice falling (roll-fall for controlled jumps). One of my friends started practicing some time after I did. He isn't all that agile and a bit stupid (), so he ended up hurting his own arm pretty badly from falling. A wall-tic (dodge) accident, he was doing some dumb stuff with a wall and ground that was at an angle. Ended up falling backwards as he landed and took the fall with his arm, in one of the worst ways possible.

I haven't hurt myself yet, just sore muscles and fingers.

I can only do like one pull-up if that...

Also, how in the world to people hold them selves up inbetween walls? I always find myself sliding down...mainly my feet. Is it because of my shoes?

Partially. It's also distance between walls and technique and exerted pressure.

If you can only do 1 pull-up, you need to do a few months of serious strength training before even thinking of doing freerunning. You should be able to do at least 10.

For the wall thing, two factors matter: force you're pushing against the walls, and the coefficient of static friction of your shoes. A pair of hiking boots and some stronger legs will go a long way.

I don't have any gyms like that...

The only place where I would actually be forced to work out is gym class in school...

I could try to find some place to do pull-ups.

Edit: Actually, I think there was a gym that was built when we had a subway built.

It would be nice to try and find somewhere padded... Otherwise just try around soft ground first.

and yeah, get your strength up first.

      Push ups, weights.

No squats. More injuries happen during squats than anything.

I don't know about that. Parkour and freerunning should help you with building strength, but yeah, you really should be able to do more than one, and definitely start out with the little stuff first.

Don't buy any training programs or gym memberships, or complicated diet programs or whatever. Just do sit-ups, push-ups, running, and try to cut back on the junk food. Try to run at least a mile every day, and build up longer distances too. The only thing I would consider buying is a pull up bar, they're like 20$ and they are very useful. Put one in your doorway if you can, so you'll be constantly reminded to keep doing them.

It may be hard to stay motivated to keep exercising until you're ready enough, but just put Urban Ninja on repeat until you're ready to keep going.

And getting over fears? The best way is to just experience it. But 1.) Don't do it until you're physically fit enough, and 2.) know your limits.

One way to stay motivated is to organize a couple dedicated friends who want to do it with you too. This will also eliminate the need for spotters because they'll be with you.

And before you try any crazy backflip-off-the-wall shit, make sure you can do it in a padded gym first. It's really worth it.

Lol, I want a giant pool with those soft cubes in it

Also, I'm not really sure how many pull-ups I can do...
Last time I tried I was able to get about 1 or 2...I was never really good at them.

I'd say if you aren't doing weights a hundred a day to begin with, at least if you want to be ready by next season.

      Ok...

Now I just need to figure out how to do this without making myself feel weird...

Being alone would help, but just doing it also seems weird to me.

Backflipping isn't really parkour, though I suppose freerunning covers it to some extent. I stay away from it, I just want to get to places in a fast and fun way

I thought the only difference between the two was that Freerunning is called Parkour if you're doing it in France
