Thread: Tell me about stereotypes.

This can include social stereotypes and racial stereotypes, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

What are the common stereotypes? What can we do to reduce stereotypes in our societies?

Emo is a big stereotype. Wearing black and eye liner seems like the minimum needed to be called emo.

All stereotypes are the same.

Common ones that I can think of:

Jews are cheap
Blacks eat friend chicken, watermelon, and enjoy malt liquor
Whites have no butts and can't dance
Asians can't drive and replace the l sound with an r sound
Women can't drive
Muslims are terrorists
Arabs are muslims
Anyone darker than white, but not black is Mexican
Mexicans are lazy
Gays like the musical theatre and have the best style
Lesbians wear flannel shirts and drive pickup trucks
Christians hate homosexuals and believe in creationism
The french are stuckup
Americans are rednecks
Asians all know kung fu
Asians have small penises
Blacks have large penises
Blacks are always looking for a mugging victim
Southerners are gun nuts

The way to get rid of these stereotypes is for people to stop being so damn sensitive to them. Learning to laugh at yourself and realize that people make racist jokes that are just jokes is good for society. No one gets offended when Lisa Lamponelli makes some of the most racist jokes I've ever heard because everyone knows that they are just jokes.

I live in Mississippi and I'm glad you cited this as a stereotype because I'm tired of people thinking Southerners (especially Mississippian's) are gun-slinging drunkards. If anyone else says any differently they can argue that "stereotype" with the barrel of my rifle...or challenge me to a beer drinking competition.

And to the question of :

Have you guys ever been the victim of stereotypes?

Obviously, somebody has to go through with one in their lives.

Almost daily. A majority of my closest friends are white and, since I feel at home hanging out anywhere and with anyone, I'm often perceived as "that black guy," especially by those that haven't had all that much exposure to black people. It never seems to fail that simply my presence is enough to provoke a racial joke or stereotype or two. It's not always something overtly mean-spirited, but often something that can be interpreted as such. I'll usually just laugh it off because, really, what point is there in getting defensive over it? It gets old after a while, though.

On the other hand, I hear stereotypes about white people, coming from black friends and family, all the time. Again, not always something obviously malicious - but ignorant, nonetheless.

I try not to stereotype because I'm conscious enough to know that there are exceptions to every stereotype. To just assume someone is not an exception is (the way I see it) to disrespect that person, without even knowing anything about them. Often being one of those exceptions, myself, I just find it really ignorant when people undermine that fact simply to dish out some of what I would consider "tasteless humor."

I agree with ninja, they are simply just stereotypes and are meant as a simple joke. I don't ever understand why people are always so sensitive to them.
