Tell me about good, cheap, homecooked food a college student can make

I need to know some recipes for good, cheap food with minimal preservatives/processing ingredients, etc. I like my food to have a more genuine taste. I'd like to know recipes from any culture, in fact i am totally open to trying new foods that i have never tasted or even heard of. But it needs to be something i can make in my kitchen, and preferably take to school for lunch.

It also helps with the ladies if you know how to cook

Dumplings are not that difficult and awesome Also spaghetti and meatballs is easy. Chicken breasts are easy and adding some spices can dramatically change it so that you don't get sick of it. Thyme is a good spice to add, as is oregano, marijuana, and sage. I'm serious about the pot, has a nice taste, and the THC seeps into the juices and can make you a little high Haddock is excellent with some lemon and can just be thrown on a george forman. Classy and easy.

Recipe for my fav cheap salad

      Cucumber
Tomato (depending on size I'd say a 3-1 ratio of tomato to cucumber is good.)
      Italian seasoning (generous)
Salt (generous, sea salt is better)
      Pepper(generous)
Olive Oil (feel it out, you get better with the Oil-vinegar ratio as you do it more)
      Balsamic Vinegar

The oil and vinegar may be expensive at first, but you can get at lest 20 salads out of it. Tomato's and cucumbers are cheap too. If you want to add another ingredient go with feta cheese

      Green lentil salad

      1. Bring 0.5-1 L of water to a boil
      2. Add some salt and 250 g of green lentil
      3. Take it off after 15-20 mins and drain it
      4. Add one chopped onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, apple vinegar and olive oil
      5. Wait until it cools down
      6. Eat

      Cheap and easy to make.
It's healthier and tastier than rice.
You can store it for 3-4 days and eat it with almost any kind of meat.

You can also add tomatoes, green salad, tuna, olives, peppers, whatever to make it even more interesting.
I would usually mix in grilled or cooked chicken breast.

Haddock is a type of fish.

Also, I've got an awesome recipe for grilled cheese. Actually think I heard it from someone here first.

      1. Take Sourdough bread.
      2. Lather both sides with Whipped Garlic Butter.
      3. Sandwhich is together with 3 types of cheese (Swiss and Mozzarella are a 4. must for me)
      5. Grill it.
      6. Serve.

I love to cook Chinese (Mongolian chicken is my best dish) and Italian, as well as just throw stuff in and see what happens. Last night I cooked a variation of chicken scarpariello and a simple rice pilaf with sweet peppers, minced onions, garlic and ginger (unfortunately the latter was dried, ran out of fresh).

For the chicken I took two boneless skinless chicken breasts, split them, tenderized with a mallet, and rolled in flour with thyme, basil, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and rosemary. I made sure the flour coated the chicken well. In a medium sized skillet I heated about a tablespoon of olive oil, then started a tablespoon each of onions and garlic heating. After about two minutes I added more oil and the chicken. Once the chicken was nearly done, I added half a can of chicken stock and about a 1/4 cup of white zinfandel wine. Then I let it cook down into the chicken, serving over rice when the sauce was thick and almost cooked down completely.

For the rice pilaf, I heated a tablespoon of olive oil, added three small sweet peppers minced, about three tablespoons minced onions, two cloves garlic, and sautéed. After 3-4 minutes, I added another tablespoon of oil and two cups uncooked rice (Arborio is best, I used what I had which was cheap generic "Minute" short-grain white rice) and stirred well to coat the grains with oil. Next I added a few tablespoons of pineapple juice and a tablespoon or two of white wine. After letting that soak in I added one can of chicken stock and one cup of water (for real cooking rice that would be two cans stock and two cups water) and dried ginger, stirred in and brought to a simmer over low to medium heat, covered and let simmer until 98% of the liquid was absorbed. Then I removed from heat and let sit for a couple minutes before serving.

Bottom line: just play around with spices and ingredients until you get a feel for what works and what doesn't. Learning how to make bread is a big help, too. You can find bread-makers at second-hand stores on the cheap, or do it by hand. Bread goes with just about anything.

You can make three boxes of spaghetti, three pounds of ground beef, and two jars of spaghetti sauce go a very long way for just a little bit of money.

Way to be a health nut!

Ooo! I have an original idea! Corned beef sandwhich (I forget exactly what they're called), it's easy. There's like thousand island dressing on it, corned beef, and, what's it called? Tell ya when I think of it. Look it up.
I think that it's that white stuff you put on hot dogs... Well, then alls it is is grilled up, like a grilled cheese.
